My 5th gen had an automatic. My 6th gen has a manual. Of the two I greatly prefer the manual. The added bonus is nobody else in the family can drive it.

I have 2016 SS with A8. 34000KM and no problems so far. I have a lot of fun with the manual mode but greatly appreciate the fast shifting full auto mode also. Manual mode with paddle or using the shifter changes gears about as fast I could in previous manual cars I own. It isn't instant the moment you hit the paddle/shifter, but is about the speed it would probably take me to hit to clutch, change gear, so forth in my previous manual cars. I've been very happy.

As others have said you could get the 2019 with the A10. If I was doing that I'd get an aftermarket ZL1 front end, with the ZL1 1LE grille. Though... simply vinyl wrapping or painting the center bumper portion might be enough to satisfy me. I think it looks pretty darn good painted.

I have a 16 2SS with the A8. I had the shudder problem since just after 10K miles. I went through the triple flush, 2 torque converter changes and now a replacement transmission. I would never buy an A8 again. My car has spent months at the dealer over the last 2 years. The shudder is gone after they put in a new rebuilt transmission but I feel like i'm driving a time bomb

I would stay away from the A8. Triple flush at 15k shudder is back at 20k. I’m working to trade mine now. I wish I could have known this earlier on and I would’ve gone with the manual.

Get the manual
1) way more fun to drive
2) does not have AFM
3) no A8 worries

Trans is fine. My buddy has a 17 that I co-drive in events. It’s fine.

The 2016’s are the only iffy ones, and even at that, you’re looking at a fluid flush and/or converter. Then you’re good to go.

You’re looking at a 2018. Go for it!

The 8L90 problems have not been fixed. This trans deservedly carries a taint.

Yes that’s what the dealer is telling me but I’m concerned that it will just come back later on. My is a 2017 by the way. I’m going to let them fix it since it needs to be done.

2800 miles here and no issues. 👍🏻 Had her for a year now.

Had never heard of the issue until joining this site. Son has had his 17 RS V6 A8 for 9 months and the car has approx 3,325 miles on it (had 602 mi when we took delivery as dealer in NE Ms picked it up on a transfer in Southeastern Ark. ). Date of manufacture on the car door is 6/16. I often set the computer screen display to Trip A or B just to watch it change from 6 to 4 cylinders and back. It is so smooth that it has often changed b4 I remember to look. Hope it stays that way in the future, 17 year od son really likes to keep the mileage down and mainly drives only to HS and back home.

I will say this, and it applies to nearly all modern automatic transmissions:

There is quite a bit of adaptive learning these automatics do. Before you start blaming the transmission as being bad, check your driving style: Are you left-foot braking a lot? How aggressive are you with brakes and throttle on average (apply and release)?

If you have aggressive inputs and/or mess with engine load abnormally, the transmission will begin to adapt to those situations and shift seemingly odd. I will tell you, after a single autocross even, it takes my buddy’s A8 some regular driving to feel “normal” again.

In addition, if you have wheels that aren’t balanced that great, you can run into a constructive resonance at certain RPMs and vehicle speed, especially in V4, that will produce a feeling like a “shudder” or “judder”. This is another thing I noticed driving my friends car on the freeway with his race tires and wheels that are not balanced. It threw me off because it didn’t feel like a normal wheel vibration (I know that feeling); it felt like something powertrain/drivetrain related. If I changed my vehicle speed a bit, the issue went away; in and out of V4 the issue was there in either, but slightly more in V4. Engine RPM slight changes didn’t get rid of it. It was definitely a trifecta: small vehicle speed range, RPM and wheel balance, with wheel balance being the culprit (as the factory wheels and tires, that are balanced, do not do this).

I’m not saying there aren’t issues - it’s a mass produced car and there will be. But just be mindful. The A10 seems much more suspect to little driving characteristics causing weird adaptive learning.

Mines been excellent. Had the shudder around 10k ago, got the triple flush and been perfect ever since. If it’s an 18, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.

Al's Answer:

This round of “Ask Al” focuses on the Camaro 8-Speed Automatic Transmission. I want to be clear in that we will only be talking about the Camaro application, not any other GM products in this response. You asked for information on the complaint of Transmission Shudder. We define “shudder” as a shake or vibration during light throttle acceleration, and it usually occurs between 25 and 80 mph (40 and 128 kph) at a Steady State. I hope we have generally categorized the concern properly to what you are experiencing.

We regret that we did experience a number of customer warranty cases in the 2016 Model Year. While the 2016 Model Year was a fairly short one, we did our best to rapidly collect enough data about the fluid to determine a solution. The initial findings showed an issue with the quality of the friction modifier in the fluid collected from customer cars. This is an additive to the transmission fluid to prevent a ‘shudder’ feeling during a torque converter clutch operation. If a car that is experiencing shudder is not serviced early, the torque converter clutch material could become burnished and may require a torque converter replacement. The dealer has a specific service procedure that they will follow to determine the required service for your vehicle. So, if you believe you are experiencing shudder, see your Chevy dealer right away, because the earlier you get it serviced, the better. Please keep in mind, not all 8-Speed Automatic Transmissions exhibit this issue.

So, what is the service procedure? Once we determined the issue was due to the quality of the friction modifier in the fluid, we developed a service procedure to flush and fill the transmission fluid 3 times, which eliminates most of the shudder concerns. This service process may not work for a vehicle with shudder that goes too long without service, in which case it will most likely require a new torque converter. Since we started using Dexron HP transmission fluid in March of 2017 both in production and for service, we believe we have basically eliminated the shudder. When used for service, it only requires a single flush and fill.

To summarize, if you have not experienced the shudder, you probably won’t experience the issue. If you have a 2016 or 2017 (built before March 2017) that is experiencing transmission shudder, you should get it serviced as soon as possible. If you had the ‘triple flush’ and your problem is fixed, great. If not, you will likely need a new torque converter. As always, your first stop with questions is your qualified Chevrolet dealer service station.
