State of Emergency enacts certain laws and restrictions. It also prevents price gouging. If one were to increase the cost of fuel exponentially in this case in response to a state of emergency, then they can be heavily fined.

There are easier, more efficient ways to stock up in bulk.

Mind boggling.
Costs.. ..they need to reach data and functions provided by other corporate facilities in other geographical regions and the only way to entirely privatize it would be running dedicated cable cross country, not going to happen. The solution is to use a 3rd party WAN Provider and secure it over VPN or MPLS who already has connections to all necessary regions. The downfall is, it leaves them discoverable on the public WAN. Typically it's not easy to crack the code in infiltrating the systems.. there's usually an insider who leaks information for these attacks to occur.

i thought all the kids learned about this in middle school when the anarchist cookbook gets circulated.

pfft. youtube videos. read hundreds of pages of fixed width text and find out how dangerous all of the things described are by experiment. That's how you learn

I've heard hacks and ransoms are pretty common. My guess, they will likely pay-up and it usually is in the form of bit-coins...and we'll never hear the details.

Any how, I'm sure this pipeline ran fine somehow without computers. Hopefully someone remembers how to actually make something work without software bs...Good luck.
And that's why you should run backups on your computer regularly.

Though, for a large network, they would probably have to do things differently, but I would think they have something to restore to before the ransomware is run.

i was totally out of the loop on the shortage news, and went to costco to do my weekly fillup on the way to work this morning, when i saw an incredible line... i thought there was some kind of issue with the pumps there, and thought i'll just get gas tomorrow, since i have just enough gas for another day. But after seeing the news this evening... went to get gas down the street, felt i was lucky to do as a few stations were out of gas!

Thankfully after work today I could fill my truck up and even a 5 gallon can for the lawn mowers. Plan to go back tomorrow morning and fill the ZL1 up hoping that the station isn’t out of gas.

From what I have heard, read...

Colonial's financial systems were hacked; they are not going to pay any ransom; Biden administration is taking a hands off approach, letting Colonial handle it how they want;
hacker's are a known outfit that is very good at what they do; pipeline should be up to speed by weekend; never any actual shortage, just a rush to fill up by too many; slow cog will be just getting it trucked to each gas station in a timely fashion....

Hang in there....Good luck.

I work on a large project (worth in the 10-100's billions of dollars) and remote access is required since there are experts all over the world and it's just not possible to have them all on site all the time. While the general network can be accessed any time there is a seperate infrastructure network which you can only get acceas to if someone in the control room approves your connection. Sometime it means waiting 20 minutes for approval if they're busy but at least they know exactly who and why someone is touching infrastructure.
