6 Speed Transmission Temperature
I’m looking for information for my 2017 2SS with the 6 speed manual. I know they run cooler than automatics, but I’d expect to see some movement on the gauge after driving home from work. Drove around town a bit before a 35 minute drive home, and it didn’t budge, stuck at the left side the whole way. My scan tool (Autel AL619) apparently can’t pull the transmission temperature either, it’s not in the list for live data, but I’ve got 3 intake air temperature readings! It was only 37 degrees today, but I still expected something. Am I paranoid or do I have a bad sensor? No malfunction light, just trying to get used to a new car.

Although mine is an automatic, it takes a longer and/or more intense drive for the needle ot get past 100°. If you just cruise in 5th or 6th for half an hour, I can imagine the fluid won't reach a higher temp, especially in Minnesota at this time of the year.

So what I’m hearing is wait till spring and calm down?

That, or you can try driving it like you stole it, doing a couple of no-lift shifts every two minutes
![]() Just kidding, don't overthink this and stop worrying about trans fluid temps in the dead of winter, especially if the trans goes into gear without issues. Enjoy the car, it's such a magnificent machine.

I’m going to take mine on a “spirited” drive to the grocery store for a ham, I’ll see what mine does lol

Yeah, the needle only moves for me on longer highway drives, or more spirited driving.

So that's 110° for a 30-ish minute grocery run when it's 60˚ outside. Similar to what I recall on mine: if I just cruise in 8th gear, the trans takes forever to get up to temp, but if I engage PSM and drive more vigorously, it warms up much more quickly.
Then again, I don't watch this gauge like a hawk... the oil pressure gauge, though...

I have had the same observation of little to zero movement of the needle/temp.
I was curious if there was even a temp sensor for the manuals. |

The only high friction areas are the gear tooth faces. And even with that only 2 gears are contacting at a time. One on the main shaft and one on the counter shaft. So the heat created from that is minimal and that's the highest heating point in the transmission. Everything else is roller bearings that are very low friction points.
If you think of it as a whole. Heat will transfer to cooler contacts how a heat sink does. So for example, if your in 4th gear for 50 miles then 1st 2nd 3rd 5th and 6th are just rolling around in oil not increasing in temperature. While 4th gear is getting hotter than the rest, the heat is distributed to the oil and other metal parts. So if you have more parts not increasing in temperature vs ones that are, then your not going to be gaining temperature very quickly at all. Also if your 2ss is like mine then you have a transmission oil cooler up front dissipating heat even more |

I have an auto and in Michigan fall as soon we get under about 55° I can't get my needle to move, I was freaking out the first time I noticed it as well.

For street driving, the fluid temp in a manual is not going to get very hot. It will typically stay around 100F +-, depending on the outside temp and how hard you are driving it. Really a non-issue, don't even have to think about it.
It will get much hotter during track driving. Mine will generally run around 200F

This is interesting.
I never really observed the transmission oil temp, but was curious after seeing this thread. I have the LT1 trim level and M6 without the HD cooling pack, so no independent auxiliary cooler, but there are still lines that go to/from the radiator. The temp gauge on the LT also presents differently than the SS, but I assume the resolution of the sensor and gauge are the same on both trims. I went for a short 10-15 drive today and observed the trans temp. Air temp was in the low 70'sF. I leaned into it a few times but no WOT pulls. The trans temp was around 135F by the end of the drive. |
