Inner Door Panel Arm Rest Removal

Has anybody here ever tried to remove the arm rests on the inner door panels, I bought 2 inner door panels and need to remove the arm rests on them for a custom job I'm trying to do (just the inner section with arm rests not entire door panel), I've heard drilling out the tabs on back, BUT, There's 26 small holes that go all the way around the back side of the panel.

I thought about cutting off the lip that has all 26 holes and gaining access to the back side of the arm rest, any thoughts before I start to cut or drill away?

I need to pull my panel to change out my inner door handle. I might do that tomorrow.

I feel like trying to not remove the panel will make your project 300% harder. It takes about 2 mins to have the panel off and on a table.

Let's hope my picture fixes worked this time and no upside down images.

If anybody has removed the arm rests from the inner door panel from my pic, please let me know how you did it, I haven't had time to do the custom work I want to do with panels.

Wow. Not what I expected. I currently have my door panel off to access the mirror and I see the white cloth insulation and the rubber/plastic soundproofing but I didn't notice the hard white plastic that I see in your picture. It's kind of buried behind the two things I mentioned. That looks like a PITA to attempt to gain access to the arm rest. Good luck with that. I'm curious to see your solution so keep up updated. Just because, what is it you are trying to upgrade/modify that you need the armrest off?

IIRC, it's plastic welded to the panel. You have to drill out the welds and when installing it you need to plastic weld it again.

I am in the process of trying to replace the armrest/insert material with alcantara, similar to ZLI but different colors. I have yet to attempt reassembling them. Looks possible but not easy.

are you going to do anything to get rid of the knee bolsters & make the cockpit not as constrained for knee space?

modifying the door & center console knee bolsters should be on my "to do" list, but i am fat & lazy.
