Will a 2018 ZL1 oem carbon fiber wing bolt up directly to a 2017 Camaro SS or would modifications to trunk be needed

I have a SS. Just from the pics I do not think it is a direct swap.

It's a good question. The attachment bolt patterns are the same, so that isn't an issue, but the big wang produces hundreds of pounds of downforce, which could cause the trunk lid to buckle under load.

Now, there were several deck lid variants, but the two "mainstream" parts are the one with structural reinforcement under the spoiler/wing attachment area, and the one without.

I think the SS got the reinforced lid already back in 2017, because the SS has a spoiler that does generate some downforce, unlike the LT that definitely received the non-reinforced variant, and the ZL1 1LE had already been well underway, so it probably made little sense for GM to fragment this part group any further.

What I'd do is check the deck lid part number on your car based on your VIN (a service department can do this with 100% certainty), and see its fitment information: if the ZL1 is listed there, you should be good to go.

There is nothing else you need to consider for this swap.

Yea I was wondering about the trunk lids being different structurally or not. I assumed bolt patterns were similar. I found a zl1 that’s wrecked but happens to be same hyper blue as mine so I asked the seller if I could get both trunk lids and wing

If memory serves me right, the SS spoiler matches perfect with the ZL1 wing. Just a simple bolt on/off kind of deal. And never really understood why a reinforced trunk lid was needed, drove tens of thousands of miles with the 1LE wing. And now I’ve been driving with something slightly larger (and at high speeds) and still never had an issue with the trunk buckling, even with my V6 trunk lid too.

My only gripe when I had with the 1LE wing is that it blocked the rear view mirror to where you couldn’t see too much behind you.

I can say that the difference between a ‘reinforced’ and non trunk is noticeable. Or maybe it’s the shocks, either way I drilled into my ‘16 1LT trunk to add the OEM SS spoiler. Fit like a glove but when closing it, it slammed with crazy force. Like enough to probably cut a finger clean off, my 1LE on the other hand is nowhere as bad, sure they make the same thump to close but it was a definite difference.

I went investigating into my car and mine already has the reinforced trunk for the 1le wing and I found a really good condition oem zl1 1le wing and bought it for 800 which I thought was a steal since it looks brand new and is a legit real GM wing. I called the dealership heee in my town and they said if I wanted one they found one at another dealer and it was a bit more than 5900, so I’m happy with spending 800.

You're also missing a lot of other components that the ZL1 came with as well....engine....supercharger.....canards....susp ension.......good price on the wing though....that is a steal.....

I have had a wing on my ZL1 non 1LE for a while. And I drive it pretty fast in the twisties (no track yet still working on a roll bar) and have had no issues with the trunk flexing that I can tell and mine is a Convertible

If the 6th gen is like the 5th, convertibles should have a reinforced trunk lid?

yes it will fit. all 6th gen camaro trunks are the same

I'm assuming our cars have trunk torsion springs (I m not at home otherwise I would check). Assuming so, and that the springs are different for models with spoilers, it could explain the difference you felt. More weight = stronger springs.

The SS-1LE spoiler is really light, so I would be a little surprised if Chevy used different springs on cars with that option. That said, my LT1 was optioned with a CFM blade spoiler from factory (same shape as the SS-1LE spoiler) and my trunk does close with an excessive amount of force; so much so that I usually lower the trunk by hand until it's within 1-2" of being closed, then let go.

Storytime: I owned a 2006 WRX STI over 15 years ago. It had a huge oem trunk spoiler. I removed it once for fun, and the trunk could have doubled as a trebuchet when pulling the release.

Edit: I looked at my trunk last night and didn't see any torsion springs, but a lot is covered by trim panels. Perhaps the hinges/shocks are doing all the work and there's no torsion springs.
