How to manage throttle in AutoX

Done two events and improved a bit ranking wise, 2nd time had a ride along, lines were fine but its hard to manage throttle with such a powerful car. How am I supposed to regulated throttle responce?

Make sure you're running in Track Mode. It gives the throttle mapping a more gradual tip-in so that it's easier to manage. Beyond that, tires make a world of difference. For example, Bridgestone RE71RS tires hook up well for acceleration and will therefore accept more tractive force than the stock Goodyears...quite a bit more.

It really comes down to seat time.

But smooth and consistent throttle is really required. They don't take kindly stabbing like some cars do. That works in some scenarios... but thats down the road lol.

Soon youll be able to know the throttle position and the torque and use it to your advantage

Agreed. Tires, seat time and track mode. You'll get better as sensing the limit of adhesion of the tires during acceleration, braking and turning, or combinations of the three.

Smooth and precise ankle rotation with well controlled foot flexing all applied with patience and restraint.

Squeeze, not mash.

Focusing on your how and when you move your foot will pay much larger dividends at a much lower cost than looking at parts and settings.* Changing the car doesn't help a whole lot if your foot still doesn't know what to do.

If you're wearing heavy or thick soled shoes, try driving shoes, wresting shoes, or "barefoot" shoes. Whatever has super thin, flexible soles that let you feel the pedal better. Driving barefoot on the street to improve your foot's physical sensitivity an also help.

*There are a few cars out there with throttle mappings so horrible, you need to use specific ones, but the Camaros are not in that bucket. Any of them are "fine" for figuring stuff out. There are some very quick autocrossers in Camaros that use Track and others that use Sport.

Track mode for sure. Also, be extremely aware of steering angle relative to throttle input. Too much steering angle with too much throttle input means spinning. But being aware of that, you can put down some pretty fast times...even in the rain! When the wheels are straight, you can generally send it, but moderation is still key, because the faster you go the earlier you have to brake for the next turn and being over-speed in that turn and the exit puts you back to square one and then getting on power to try and maintain speed can quickly kick the rear end out again. Once you get this down though, you can do pretty well and harness the turning grip.

Also play with front/rear PSI bias. I find I have to run around at least 1psi more in the rear. It may introduce a little understeer bias, but at the same PSI or reversed, the over-steer was pretty out of control.

Our races are very tight and short, so if I can't get to 2nd, which is very common, I really need track mode to help modulate. If I can get to 2nd, I get a little more to play with, but still not optimal mapping and track is still better IME.

Auto trans or manual? Are you left foot braking? A lot of the fundamentals of Auto X you can practice on the street without driving like Travis Pastrana. I sucked at Auto X with my Z. Stopped going after I was warned about it not being a drifting event. Oops.

Learn to squeeze throttle - not stab.

Try different traction modes. Race 2 works great, but you have to be EASY on the launches or it shuts you down. After much practice and few years of seat time.. sport double tap and mostly off mode. Very linear throttle but full power on tap

It's still giant car to manage - its like autox on HARD mode.

The different traction modes are going to rob power and it's robbing seconds on an autoX course. A bigger track may be a lot different. AutoX is where you can (and should) run everything off to be able to control the car. It's not only good for learning control, it's the fastest way.

Correct, all off is generally best for autocross, but you still need to pick a drive mode (Tour, Sport, Track).

The problem is the throttle mapping. You could go pedal-commander, but Track is the most linear, which is best for modulating power.

If you have the GMPP AX rear diff tune, I was told it's only active in track mode with all nannies off.
