Handling after steering gear recall

Hey guys, posting here just out of curiosity if I’m the only one. But I had my steering gear recall done on my 2017 Camaro SS 1LE about a month ago and ever since I got the car back it just has not handled the same at all. The car feels looser in the steering and it does not feel like it’s on rails like how it used to. I’m curious if it’s just an alignment issue because I know these cars are finicky and have certain alignments.. Now the car understeers it feels like there’s more body roll in the turns at high speeds. If anybody has any information, please let me know. I have also been told that there is nothing wrong with the car and everything is fine but I drive it every day and I know when something’s off.

Alignment can make a huge difference here, as I've experienced myself as well. I'd go to a different shop that is known to do excellent alignments and try this avenue first.

Is that recall only on the 1LE? I haven't heard anything about one on my 2017 2SS.

I can’t necessarily find the link for the recall right now, but I looked it up and it’s only for certain 2017 and 2018 models if you haven’t gotten anything in the mail or an email you should be all right. I’ll start with an alignment to see where that gets me.

I think the suggestion for the alignment is a good one. But, if you had the steering rack replaced it's likely that the dealer had to remove and reinstall quite a few components in the suspension to get it in and out.

As the alignment tech to just do a quick inspection while he's under there to make sure the dealer tightened everything down correctly. I wouldn't be shocked if someone had forgotten to torque a bolt here or there when doing the warranty work.

If you are really paranoid, see if you or the alignment tech can look for any new looking parts (besides the steering rack, of course). One problem you can have at GM dealers is that they might not be aware or paying attention and install say, a sway bar from another Camaro or damage a part and replace it with the wrong one. That's a low chance, but I have had exactly that happen to me more than once.

Maybe the steering sensitivity mode was changed?

I was the reason this recall happened.

Back in 2018, my 2017 SS with about 5k miles on the odometer at the time would randomly lose power steering assist. I would be driving and everything would be fine and suddenly the power steering just failed. The problem was that the issue was intermittent and would not leave a code in the system after restarting the car. Restarting the car temporarily restored power steering but it would eventually fail again while driving.

When I took it to the dealer after restarting the vehicle, they couldn't find anything. It was as if nothing had ever went wrong and they required me to return while the car was having the problem so I had to wait till the problem recurred and when it did, I had to keep it running and not turn it off / on. When this finally happened I drove it back to the dealer without power steering so they could scan it.

They finally had visual proof and a code that they had to obtain while the issue was happening first hand with the car running but they didn't know what was causing the issue. They kept my car for a few weeks and they ended up replacing some wiring but the issue quickly happened again after I received the car back. Frustrated, I demanded a new power steering rack but they kept the car for another month and some change and even flew in some GM Engineers to specifically investigate my car. They eventually replaced the rack and a few months after this occurrence, the issue became a recall.

I'm in the 15% that have not had this done. Never had a steering problem. I did receive the recall notice.
I read on this forum that the root cause was that the angle sensor in the steering module was failing, and the car would lose power assist. Been waiting for any sign of that.

Nice to have a free steering rack replacement down the road

85% of 2017's affected? If I have heard this recall previously then I've spaced it!(totally possible these days). Where do I check my VIN at?
And thanks to all that provide this info- I knew there was a reason I keep coming back to this site-lol.
