How much is an oil change?

I work as a diag tech so i have full access to my shop to change my oil on all my cars for free. I haven't paid for oil or an oil change in the past 20 years ,So i was wondering how much does it cost you guys to get oil changes on your 6.2 cars? Mine holds 11 quarts so i figured it might be expensive.

Last time I went to the dealership they charged me $130 for Mobil1 0W-40 and an ACDelco filter. This was 2-3 years ago, though, been doing it myself since then.

DIY 0w40 Supercar + ACDelco PF64 = $110+tax $160 if I include the cost of lab analysis.

Just under $10/qt at walmart right now: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mobil-1-S...e-6/1096252684

10 quarts of Castrol edge 5w30 for $52.00 and a K&N 1017 filter for $17.00... $69.00 roughly.

All the dealers near me charge roughly $225 for an oil change. It has gone up in recent years. Even the service advisor raised an eyebrow when I got my last change haha. Before anyone says I’m a sucker for paying that much, I track my car and I don’t want ANY arguments about undocumented oil changes, using the wrong oil and filter, etc if my engine were to god forbid let go on track. Unfortunately it’s been happening more often lately and my theory is it has to do with the L87 recall as I believe the LT1 uses the same exact bottom end as the LT1.

$17 a quart times 10 equals $170.
$10 for the oil filter.

$180 + labor and taxes comes out to around $225 at the dealer.

just an FYI if you don't already know, you are now cleared by GM's DEXOS approvals to use regular M1 0W40 (FS) now if you wanted to - you can find them at walmart reguarly for $25/5qt jug which will cut your oil cost in about half.

October 2023 - Dealership 1

Oil: $9.57/qt - $95.70

Filter: $4.30

Labor: $24.95

Total w/ tax: $133.20

January 2024 - D 2

Oil: $12.40/qt - $124

Filter: $9.00

Labor: $18.81

Total w/ tax: $147.83 - got a small discount because when I called and when I arrived in the service lane I was told both times it would be $100 + tax for full synth 10 qt for my specific car. Then payment time it was $50 more, wasn’t happy since I decided to make the drive rather than go to the closer dealership. Never went back to that dealership.

August 2024 - D 1

Oil: $9.64/qt - $96.40

Filter: $4.30

Labor: $29.99

Total w/ tax: $143.66 - noticed a month later they double charged me for the filter. I give them the benefit of the doubt but I always read the receipt before I leave now.

January 2025 - D 3

Oil: $15.70/qt - $157

Filter: $7.00

Labor: $25.95

Total w/ tax: $207.97 - Don’t really remember why I went to this dealership, I only have record of sending it for a CEL here and got the oil change done too.

August 2025 - D 1

Oil: $10.01/qt - $100.10

Filter: $4.90

Labor: $29.99

Total w/ tax: $116.16 - had a 15-20% discount on service from a mailed offer. Personal record for oil change price.

The cheapest oil changes were all done at the same dealership, the two outliers were both different dealerships. I check for oil change coupons online typically and call them asking when making an appointment. No dealership has beat the lube center at my regular dealership as of yet.

I will do my own oil changes, once warranty runs out

The lube center has told me they only use Mobil 1, no ACDelco so I believe them until they give me a reason not to. Pricing does mostly depend on location though.

5k mile oil change intervals. My car’s had one history where the #2 “intak[e] lifter had a rapid unintended self disassembly of itself and failed” to which they replaced odd bank lifters only. Covered under warranty and no related problems in 25k miles. Once warranty ends it will be dealt with properly.

I’ve heard Cadillac dealerships are a vastly different experience but will service our cars too.

Yes- it's been getting less frequent since retirement but I do still change it earlier than the oil monitor calls for a change. I've been using Motul 5w-40. It's full synthetic and I had been getting their 8100 X-cess Gen-2 without problems for roughly $53 for a 5 liter bottle. Right now, Amazon's got it for $83.41 for 2 5L bottles ($41.71 each).
However, now I'm seeing Motul 5w-40 X-CLEAN that is Dexos2 approved and continues to provide protection with prolonged changing intervals and is full synthetic too. It's available for $39.99/5L at Amazon right now.
So $80 and the cost of a filter. I'll keep DIYing the oil as long a I can-LOL!

no idea- maybe a little more time to allow it all to drain back after a drive? But 10 has always filled mine up. I usually check it after sitting overnight and cool.

$169.99 for Mobil 1 at Rinke in Warren Michigan. Costs me about half that to do it myself.
