It happened again. Theft Attempt #2

I bought the car a year ago. 6th Gen ZL1. I park it in my driveway because I have another car in the garage. In May two kids probably 19-20 walked up to it around 3 AM and shined a flashlight into it. They put a towel on the window and we're about to punch it when I went into the garage and they got spooked and ran away.

The next day I started looking at anti theft measures for our cars. Within a week I added 4 levels of anti theft to address the key fob programming, fob relay entry, and a few others.

Last night they came again. This time they broke the window. I watched it happen on my cameras and called the cops. They had one guy punch the window and one guy covering my front door while another was in a getaway car. He connected his programmer to my OBD 2 port and guess what? Nothing happened. I activated the camera mic, told him he wasn't getting the car, and activated the siren. They took off.

If you do not have any theft measures on your car, please add them.

Sucks I had to replace the window but I was not worried at all that they'd actually get the car. They didn't even make it past any of anti theft measures. The car will remain garaged now.

Very thankful all the anti theft measures worked. They didn't even make it past a single one. It's kind of a 4 stage system.

I have a multi-stage theft prevention system as well... However, you might want to add a couple "visible deterrents" as well to hopefully prevent them from breaking the window in the first place... These will set you back roughly $100 total, but it is just another layer of aggravation to slow/deter them and also is a sign that these may only be the "Tip of the Iceberg" (which would be a correct assumption)

I'm sorry to say, but it also depends on WHERE you live rather or not this is as common as people depict.

Where I live, its a very rare occurrence. And let them try to cut the cats off my car.... Jokes on them, I assure you.

And I do have theft device on my car, and my backup is a 9mm and 7.62mm.

Too bad you don't live in a non-communist state where you could have solved the problem permanently.

I would have ventilated them.

Its not always just the state, but also what city.

If I take my car to the one major city here, I'd be walking home. I just don't work, or live in that city.

It's a lot more common in California, NY, Florida, even some southern states, but more specifically it has to do with what city. Even where you live it is more common in Louisville.

I completely agree... I would post it online and wear a Grady Judd t-shirt "We Ran Out of Bullets" during the questioning!

Oh PLEASE try to steal my car, breach my fence, step into my yard... be sure you are right with Jesus, cause I will arrange the meeting! Born in Louisiana, LSU Alumni and "Swamp People" is not just a TV show... as I migrated to Texas to extend those God Given Rights!

I agree - I think the minimum for anyone with a 6th gen right now is The club, OBD lock, and a faraday pouch/box for the FOB. Those three things will keep all but the most hardcore thieves from getting your car.

sorry to hear this OP. i'd be nervous enough leaving my lowly LT1 outside in a driveway or apartment, let alone a big boy ZL1. do you have an immovable project taking up the garage, or maybe the wife's car (in which case i understand you don't wanna rock that boat)? might be time to let the camaro in there to stay out of sight at night.

and i'm surprised nobody's said it but please don't murder someone for breaking into your car if they aren't threatening your life. regardless of legality, i can almost guarantee the legal fees would be deep enough to buy you 3 ZL1's.
