Angry Nightmare of owning my 2022 ZL1 1LE

I just got word from GMC that the engine is NOT covered by the warranty because of track use. This took 4 months to get an answer. It was discovered that the oil cooler, filter and pan were filled with metal filings. The car ran fine. The car was bought new in May of 2022. The motor was replaced in April of 2025 with 11200 miles. There were about 40 road course days on the car. A CALLAWAY SC750 was installed in July of 2022. I love the car and driving it. These have been my problems:
1) CAMARO (2017-2022) fuel spit back (cannot put fuel in tank) - one trip to the dealer, not resolved, erratic
2) Clutch replaced (M6) - 11000 miles, OK wear item
3) 2 IAT sensors replaced because of limp mode in 5th or 6th gear - not resolved
4) Knock sensor and harness burned out - replaced
5) Limp mode in 5th or 6th gear - both original and new engine, erratic, no resolution. Biggest obstacle to high-speed racing in Nevada, 140-160mph classes.
6) Frozen lifter - required all 16 lifters and push rods being replaced at 4000 miles, covered by warranty
7) Right front wheel bearing fried, dealer said all lubricate drained out because of track time, replaced under warranty

I am located in San Francisco bay area. Interest in reputable shop that may be able to help me.

That sucks, sorry. This is exactly why my drivetrain is still stock. Newer cars can be a PITA to diagnose, I wish you the best of luck and hope you solve the issues quickly and without spending a ton.

So, it appears that almost all if not all of your issues started after the SC750 package. Callaway is supposed to have a supplemental warranty, what does that cover? Is it expired? Seems like Callaway should be covering this not GM if the Callaway warranty hasn't expired yet.

Is this the original warranty or the extended warranty? Also I am sure you tuned the motor.

Was that at the dealer for the third engine or just replacement of the original?

Do you a written denial you can post? Just curious what it said.

I know first handedly that al oppenheiser was full of shit when he stated if it breaks at the track it's covered.

I think he meant to say you will be broke if it breaks at the track.

Awesome, another Callaway SC750.
I can recommend a software tune anyway, tune on my car was dogshit and was just a little above stock ZL1 power. Same was with another SC750 here in the forum I talked to.
Jannetty took care of the software and it runs perfect now at the advertised 760 HP.
Callaway tune has very rich fueling and uses advanced intake cam timing at high rpms.
I can promise at 760 HP, the main catalytic converters won't last long under track use.

Warranty was VOIDED that day, period... Maybe Callaway offers something, but you just washed GM's hands of any liability...

So the car has had three engines in it thus far? Including one installed just a few months ago that failed? Can't say I've ever heard of that many engine failures on the 6th gen in such a short period of time.

Wait, you don't understand how putting an aftermarket blower on the car would void the warranty?

As a fellow road course guy I feel your pain.

The truth is that once you modify the car GM will not warranty anything. The car needs to be completely unmolested. I've been told that GM will even make the dealer send pics/vid before approving warranty. Not sure if that's true but I wouldn't put it past them.

Second, I do about 15 HPDE per year on average and I'm at the bleeding end of the Race group. Things are gonna break and truth be told, at our pace, engines get torn down regularly for inspection/rebuild. If you're running any type of performance package and not inspecting your engine every 3 months you're asking for trouble.

Jannetty tuned my car which is essentially stock plus a Magnuson 2650. It makes just under 700hp at the wheels. I would love a cam (not sure if the Callaway package added this), but I don't want to risk the increased service/inspection intervals. I'm on the fence. No matter how good the tune is you just can't get away from shortened service intervals.

Just a couple of questions:

1) How did you manage to wear through a clutch at 11k miles? Is it aftermarket? My car has 55k and the OEM clutch is perfectly fine.

2) Regarding your toasted Knock sensors and harnesses, are you running 2" headers? Are they ceramic coated or heat wrapped?

Given your use case, I'd probably look into picking up a used LT4 and going back to a conservative state of tune, then build from there gradually. Something with that engine seems problematic based on the symptoms/description that you gave.

Callaway Warranty Program
Callaway 3 year / 36,000 mile Limited Warranty

Unlike other aftermarket warranties, Callaway provides a comprehensive warranty program that works in tandem with General Motors’ OEM warranties, providing seamless coverage of both Callaway and GM installed components during the term of GM’s Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty.

And under exclusions:

Participating in or preparation of the vehicle for racing or other high-performance driving activity (on a track or otherwise). Including but not limited to competition driving events and performance driving school training or practice.

So while GM covers HPDE days (non-timed events), Callaway does not.

Four months after buying my ZLE and tracking it, I had multiple random misfires and took it to the dealer I bought it from. They replaced the plugs and wires under warranty even though I tracked it. Another month later, AC belt shredded due to the impact of the curbing on turn-3 Road Atlanta and the phone falling out of the Ram X-Mount, hitting the dash and bouncing into the Seat Cooling button commanding the AC Compressor to come on at WOT 6000rpm and creating a hard code. GM reviewed the scan data from the CEL which gave them the lead to check BCM data as well. The OEM GM tune commands the AC system to shut off at 70% throttle but there was never a line of code for if the system was off, but the seat had a command for ON.

The short of the story is the Dealer replaced everything and then GM voided my warranty after updating their tuning for seat cooling commands. Thanks GM... You're Welcome!

If you are tracking these cars, the Mother Ship of GM will do as they care and hang you out. So I have chosen what I think will make the most gains for my use of the car. I have yet to see anyone with a Cam change making the low-end torque and still pulling through the RPM at a power level for road racing where tires still have grip. I do see the lifters and rocker trunions as a weakness that I will soon address... but changing the cam, not unless Brian Tooley releases one that offers data from his Spintron and keeps the full range of power like I have while making more!

Addressing the cooling issues, unlocks more power and with e85 blending to 40% allows more timing, better cylinder cooling with that fuel blend and gobs of torque by keeping the velocites up to where I am at 830lbft of torque like a hockey stick. Coupled with an A10... short-shifting saves the stock parts but like NG329 says, eventually you gotta go in and inspect it all. Right now I am at 32K total miles and 13K track. It's about that time, yet my oil samples say I am still good!

The ventilated seats do not kick on the AC. They pipe in air from the ducting underneath the seat.

No he wasn't. The car has to be STOCK.

No manufacturer will cover a car that's been tuned or modified in the aftermarket away from the original design build.
