Post Btr 220 cam question

Just got my Camaro back after destroying the main bearings. Currently just btr 220, rotofab cai, and DSX flex fuel. Going back for headers and msd soon. Would it be worth it to just run the lt2 I have in the garage while I wait to get the msd? Once “fbo” and cam what numbers should I be getting?

What throttle body are you planning on running?

If I put the lt2 on while I wait for the msd it would be stock throttle body. Once I get msd I will be pairing it to a 103mm tb. Sorry if I didn’t respond correctly I’m still learning how to use the forum since I joined last night haha

The BTR220 is going to make effective power around 6500rpm. This is great for the LT2 IM. The MSD shines above 6500 RPM. You'll still make some gains over the LT2, but the cam is going to hold the MSD back, IMO. Head porting will play into this as well. I think the LT2 is going to pay better dividends with the BTR220 in terms of power under the curve over the MSD's peak performance. The BTR220 is going to run out of steam by 6700 or so.

IMO, if you're going to run the MSD you want to be running out to 7,000+.

A FBO Ported Heads, LT2 ported w/ported 95mm TB with a BTR220 on E I don't see why you couldn't lay down 500whp+ all day. E is going to help a bunch. Not sure how much E you can squeeze through the LT1 fuel system, I think around E30-40?

This right here answers your question.

Don't waste your time with the LT2 on a stock TB 87mm < 95mm < 103mm

Just wait for the MSD and 103mm otherise you are just wasting time and not gaining power.

MSD + 103 + 220 cam will shine the highest power gains outside of a high-ram setup.

But also porting the heads as Grey said will also do a lot.

Figure MSD + 103 + 220 Cam + Porting heads can increase HP by as much as 100+ with proper tuning. Just the cam and heads alone can be upwards of 90hp gain. the MSD + 103 maybe another 20-30ish.

BTR 220's are underrated compared to most cams, they can handle a supercharger upgrade if you wanted to. Obviously with a SC you'll gain more with stage 2, 3, and 4 cams, but drivability can change pretty significantly then. But if you are on a stock torque converter like I am 220 is pretty much the limit for cams, You'd have to upgrade your torque converter to go with a bigger cam.

Thank you guys for the responses and info it’s very helpful and I appreciate you all. I think I’ll keep the lt2 and put it on for now and see how it feels with proper tune. Here sometime soon I’ll go ahead and pull the trigger on the msd/103mm tb and see which one I like more. The car is currently just flexfuel, btr 220, and rotofab cai. Looking to grab some headers soon when I throw the mani on. Appreciate you guys

Bought it used 10k miles. Was told it was not abused for the beginning of its life. Later I find the previous owners social media and asked some questions and seen my car in some videos. Car was fbo since he bought it new and ran the hell out of it here in Cali doing roll races. My mechanic (master Gm mechanic) said it was either a factory defect in the crank which was unlikely, or the kid just ran the piss out of it with low oil pressure. I bought the car thinking it was stock until I had noticed he accidentally left the flexfuel sensor on it. We tried to get it through warranty but it did not pass due to the previous tune it had in the ecm files before he reverted it back to stock to trade in. Somehow it passed the stealerships certified pre owned test and was sold to me about two years ago (ignorant 19 year old kid) motor ended up blowing on me coming home from work and had to save for 6 months to get a new bottom end and a cam installed. And now btr 220 and new bottom end is how it sits now as my daily driver until I save enough to get a daily.

That sounds suspect. I bet the stealership knew it had a tune.

Remember Bottleneck physics.

LT2 will likely yield little to no gains until you switch to a larger than 87mm TB.

What year is your car? I’m wondering if this could be a failure like the L87 is having. Fluke I’m surprised you didn’t ask him this.

If your car is 2021-2024 you very likely could have had a factory defect in the crank. Google l87 recall. The L87 and LT1 have the same crank, bearings, rods and pistons
