Whats stopping GM from fixing the theft problem?

Theyve shown they still care at least a little with the last release updates to the BCM to prevent theft but why don't they go the Dodge route and completely block ANYONE from making key fobs but a dealership. I don't think many would complain if they have to go to a certified dealer to get their car unlocked. It cant be that much of an inconvenience for them.

It becomes a grey area for "right to repair" people.
For instance, Where you dont mind only having one option for device repair, not everyone shares that limited ability.
If the dealer is the only option on a key then nothing really stops them from price gouging and hiding it "procedure requirements"

Mostly because sites like this would be full of people SCREAMING about $500 keys on 8 year old cars. At least here were very few are willing to give GM a lick of credit.

Okay, provide options:

1)Dealership keys

2) Dealership can unlock, you go get a key and come back to lock if desired.

3) Leave it as is.

They could just make it so that it takes 15 - 30 minutes to reprogram a key. No criminal is going to want to sit there and wait 30 minutes in your car in the middle of the night trying to reprogram a key fob.

THIS!!! It does sound like the "Security Update" did make things take a LOT longer (posted by a member who was a locksmith), so maybe there is something to this... Hell, make it a 60 minute wait... That would solve the problem...

The car already does have a 30-minute overall delay set in the original software, see below. This does not stop thieves from bypassing any preprogrammed features or delays by using a custom OBD-II tool.

By the way, even if it takes 30 minutes, I don't see why a thief wouldn't wait at night. 30 minutes for a ZL1 feels like a "good deal".

Once you have a car stolen, you're forever on guard. Way back in 1972, my Nova SS was stolen-in broad daylight. A collector car in today's market.
The point I want to make is that nothing will stop a thief(s) who want your car and all a manufacturer can do is slow them down a little. I'm not bothering with the recent recall for BCM. A thief can gain access to a vert with a swipe of a razorblade.

Just an old aftermarket alarm with starter interrupt would be very effective. The good thing about them is that they were never in the same place or wired the same way. Factory alarms are. A thief can easily practice where to go to do what's needed to get that car running because all are exactly the same. Hidden kill switches, hidden alarms, inertia sensors. Those slow them down because they can't practice for it.
But then you still have the, pop it into neutral and push it away guys to deal with

30 minutes is a long time to sit there on a gamble that the owner doesn't show up with an equalizer. Gambling your life for a ZL1 is not a good deal from either side. If there was no way around the programming delay, I'm not sure the Camaro would be as popular to steal. But you would find out who's dying to try.

Unfortunately, in a lot of states, NC included, it is illegal to protect your property from criminal attack. Here you can't even protect your property in an attached garage. All you can legally do is call 911 and pop some popcorn.
