1. Congrats on taking this on yourself! It is a fun project for sure!
2. Once the bolts are removed, as mentioned... the existing RTV holds tight. You will need to pry off both covers gently but with force. If you have a thin metal putty knife, you can work your way around with a hammer cutting some of the RTV seal, which will make prying easier. Once the covers are removed, its a careful use of flat blade to remove all the RTV from both the block and cover. I think its best to use a slightly dull blade as to not gouge the aluminum surfaces.
3. You don't need to remove 100% of all the residue, just enough to get a clean grip o the next application.
4. Good luck a few photos of my surface attached for reference.

FWIW, most hardware chains sell plastic razor blades. I used these for cleaning up the RTV surfaces, and a soft brass brush for the stubborn shit in the grooves/dowels. As long as you aren't aggressive with the brushes, you won't mar the surfaces. Even on an engine stand with an open floor, the oil pan is an absolute pain in the ass to pry off. I can't even imagine fighting it with the engine in the car. Would rather have plastic/rubber gasket for the pan than RTV here.

I'm at the same point. Timing cover is off, gonna start on the oil pan next. Also looking for the simplest way to do it. As far as I'm understanding, gotta drop the steering rack, subframe and lift up the engine? All just to get to that pickup tube bolt. We looking at dropping the pan completely? Or is there an easier method?

(First timer here)

Ya I've dropped my pan a few times. Pull the steering shaft, then the plugs for the rack and the 2 main bolts on the subframe. I let it hang there to get the front pan bolts, pull motor mount bolts, pull the crank pulley, water pump, factory catch can, remove front cover. Then I lift from the trans, remove oil cooler, remove pan. You wont have to drop the subframe as i did the first time removing this. If it doesnt slide out the crank may have to get rotated as the counter weights can block the pan from sliding back
