1LE, removing the hood wrap and going with stripes

Has anyone removed the hood wrap and gone with stripes, kind of the old school look?

If so, any particular stripes to use or stay away from?

Were the results what you wanted/expected?

How did they hold up?

Thanks

Here's someone that did it. I like the look and am considering something similar (different colors of course).

I should mention, some state the hood might need to be polished.

Here is what silver "rally style" stripes look like on my Hyper Blue SS. I had a local graphics shop put them on right after I took dealer delivery in March 2016. So, the stripes are almost nine years old but look the same as the day they were added. I am very happy with these stripes and have always received compliments on them.

That looks awesome! Making me really want to do it too! How was the paint under the wrap?

BTW, what splitter for your splitter is that?

The GM strips and the Screaming Chicken stripes have good reputations. Haven't heard much about other brands (or maybe I haven't paid attention). I have Screaming Chicken fender hash stripes and I really like them.

And I would HIGHLY recommend polishing after removing the hood wrap. That should be part of the process.

Paint was pristine under wrap, under splitter is ZL1Addons.

Sincere question... if the paint is pristine underneath, what's the reason for polishing?

I can't imagine it being so pristine that it wouldn't need at least a cleaning and light polish. An adhesive is used to attach the wrap, so there's going to be something on the paint before it's cleaned. If it were my car, I'd do a full prep & polish before having any graphics installed. Then I would ceramic coat after the install.

It's pretty easy to DIY stripes using a 3M product called knifeless tape. It's tape with a filament embedded that, when pulled, cuts through vinyl wrap. You can also use it to make perfect butt-joints, and they have a tape with 3 filaments to make pinstripes or really whatever you can imagine.

Stripes the whole length of the car will be pricey, probably $750 and up... you can probably DIY for $1-200, depends on material/design.

I removed my OE wrap from my '22 SS 1LE to install a new one. Found this gem....Factory sand mark for a piece of white dirt. I polished the sand scratches out but the dirt was still visible. YMMV whether the paint beneath the wrap is pristine.

That’s my plan. DIY hood, top and trunk. I might even do contrasting stripes on top of black matte for all three pieces. Why? Because I have a spare trunk in the wrong color. I need to matte wrap it before I install a NLR wing. So if my trunk and hood has matte wrap, I kinda feel like the top should match.

I wonder if that 3m knifeless tape could be used on top of matte wrap (for stripes on top)? Or maybe it would rip the factory wrap off. Hmmm.

If I remove the wrap, I hope I don’t have something similar. But if I do, maybe it’ll be where the stripes land!

I CAN be used on top of vinyl. It's pretty low tack adhesive compared to the vinyl. Very common practice. -I manage a vinyl and graphics shop.
