Had an issue the other day while running a quick errand. I tried to start my car but the starter kept turning over but wouldnt start. I have this issue before but it would eventually start after 4-5 cranks. I noticed after trying once or twice there was a plasticky burning smell under the hood.
Eventually I had someone help jump the car which helped me get home but the next day I had a check engine light (which just disappeared). Do you guys think its a faulty starter issue and I should get it checked? Or not worry about it since the signals went away and the car has been starting normally otherwise. The temp was in the 60s/70s that day so I don't think it was heatsoak or anything. Its a 2017 Camaro SS just for reference. |

It can very easily heatsoak in those temperatures. If you’ve been having this issue for awhile and failed to address it you’ve probably damaged the starter solenoid at this point.
You should replace the starter and then add a thicker gauge ground wire. Search these forums for how to do the last part.

My 2017 2SS still starts on the first crank every time. Three seconds of cranking at most. I did replace the battery at the 5-year point. But no changes to starter wiring/block grounding as others have done. |

Someone mentioned the battery. I would get that tested if it's more than three or four years old.

Bump, but Can confirm I’m having that slow crank issue with the hot start, but also getting that strong smell after it finally cranks, the battery was replaced 4 months ago, went to the auto shop to check if it was faulty but they said that the battery was healthy but needed charging.

If the solenoid is the source of the smell then it is either overheating or arcing across the contacts. Both situations point to a problem with the solenoid, which is integral to the starter assembly.
I know some will want to say "bad ground," but bad ground would cause an undercurrent situation. |

I've been fighting this heat soak issue for the past year now.. I had one time where I had to wait about 35 mins before being able to restart. I just ordered a grounding cable (24"). What is the best / easiest connection point on the engine to use for the additional grounding cable? The negative post on the frame is easy and makes sense, but the tensioner bolt seems to not be too easy to use. I did see the option of just loosening the tensioner bolt and then cutting the ring terminal to make it a blade type so you can slide it under the bolt without removing. Is this the easiest method or is there another more convenient bolt to use on the engine? Thanks for any advice. Hard for me to fathom how GM did not correct this issue which was / is present on the 5th gen Camaro's as well.
