TSB 18-NA-355 Question

My 18' 8 Auto is getting the,,,,, well you know. My question is how do I approach the dealership on addressing this TSB? Is the parts (fluid) and service covered and I just pay labor? Or none of it is covered? Can I negotiate any? Or am I stuck with the entire cost? If so, what is about the rate $$$ I should expect? I am reading conflicting information as it relates to this 8 speed fiasco affecting so many GM's with this.

Thanks

The required amount of trans fluid costs about $200-250 (you'll need 20 quarts, no kidding), and the TSB specs out labor at 1.1 hours, I'd expect to be quoted $150-200 per hour.

Since you're out of powertrain warranty (why did you wait so long?), I doubt the dealership would do any of this for free even though this is a known defect on GM's part. With that said, you can always appeal to their customer goodwill budget, especially if you have a good relationship with their service department.

OK thanks for this. Looks like the dealer is the best place to take? OK on probably having to be on the hook. the car only has 46K and it just started this (albeit slight and only cruising in a sweet spot around 45) about a month ago.

Your best option is to have a dealership perform and document this, because if you read the TSB, it requires specific equipment that a third party may not have and then their version of the flush may easily be incomplete. You want all of the bad (hygroscopic) fluid out of the transmission and the TC to have a fighting chance against the shudder. A proper dealership service record for such a procedure also looks better in your carfax report if you want to sell the car later.

I understand that the shudder has just started and it's still mild, which is a huge positive in terms of your chances of success, but the issue has been known since 2017, I would've gone for a preemptive flush long ago. (Actually, I did, twice as the TSB developed and new fluids were formulated until GM finally found the solution in early 2019.)

Thank you sir! Great info. I will get with my local chevy dealer on this. I assume it's just an hour or 2? Give me time to drop off, walk to a restaurant for some lunch.

Yeah, about 2-2.5 hours if I remember correctly. The trans has to be brought up to temp before the procedure, which alone takes about 20 minutes.

Good luck, hope this will be the end of your problem
