Record of speed during impact
Totaled my Z when I got t boned earlier today. I was doing the speed limit but apparently there were “witnesses” who claimed I was going faster so I got issues a citation for speed.
Is there a black box on these cars that keeps a log of speed during impact? Or anything else that help me prove otherwise?

Ask OnStar, I'm sure they have it all. That or on the off chance HPTuners, I know it records values when a check engine light appears so hopefully a check engine light went off at the time of accident

Witnesses claiming "it looked like you were going faster than speed limit" should not count against you, in CA the police have to witness your violation. Where do you live? In Beverly Hills several years ago, a couple of D-Bags were racing a La Ferrari and 991 GT3 down narrow residential streets at 70+ MPH in front of dozens of witnesses who recorded everything on their phones. When the police showed up they couldn't even use the video evidence to charge or cite them for this heinous and deadly dangerous behavior, they said they had to be there witnessing it themselves. Before the state department could get involved, the D-Bags loaded their cars onto a jet and fled the US back to Qatar or some country nearby. https://youtu.be/GRmsNzzi0tY?si=X0HUWGA2mDrORTJY |

There is definitely more to the story than you're telling us. No one gets T-Boned by another car and then gets a ticket for speeding. There is more to this.

Yes, all vehicles have a data recorder that records the last X seconds after a crash. So you could get GM or whomever to get that data and it'll have that on there.
You definetly cannot get a cititation from a witness saying you looked like you were going over the speed limit. The officer has to see the crime personally. As usual, an officer being above the law and being a douche issued an unjustified ticket. A judge would dismiss this easily and I request that officer into court so that the judge could explain to him what he did is illegal and against the law. |

![]() As far as I know, the most recent 5 or 10 seconds of telemetry is retained by the ECM and can be retrieved, for this exact reason.

Yes, every car (atleast since obd2) records ALL kinda of info. Speed, accelerator %, brake %, ect ect ect. A dealership MAY have the software to pull that info, but more shops won't. but you can ask your tuner (or other shops) though.
That being said, unless you got a ticket for speeding, I wouldn't worry about it. "They looked like they were speeding" doesnt hold any weight. Infact, it hurts the other driver (normally) because then the question turns into "if they were speeding, why would you turn infront of them" and also shows they weren't yielding to oncoming vehicles. Basically if they couldn't complete whatever traffic maneuver they were trying to do safely, they shouldn't have done it. |

But there are 2 types of "speeding" tickets. Just depends on the verbiage. Of course it varies by state, but there is either; "speed greater than resealable or prudent" which is a "catch all" for an accident. Basically saying if you were going X speed and cause an accident... you shouldnt have gone that fast. Even if the speed limit 45 and you were doing 30, if you couldn't brake or avoid causing an accident, then you shouldn't have even been doing 30. the other is just straight up speeding. But that's usually done with radar/pacing. **the first one doesn't mean that someone can pull out infront of you and if you hit them, you are at fault...because that other driver would be getting sited for failure to yield or or some other type of moving violation. But if there was a car stopped at a light, had a green arrow to turn, was in a different lane, and you ran the red or "timed the light" so it went from red to green while the other car was still turning. Or obviously if the car was stopped at a light and you just rear end it, then you would be at fault. |

You don't get a speeding ticket by word of mouth. Unless your speed was clocked on radar it won't hold up in court.
Sounds to me like your pride is hurt, you ****ed up, don't want to admit what really happened, and want to know if there is a box onboard the vehicle that can be used as evidence to incriminate you. My advice, call a lawyer!

I would call the officers superior, how are the witnesses calibrated for determining speed what was their source or rationale for stating that?
Did the other party run a stop sign or light... |

Sorry for the loss of the car. This is why I installed a Black Vue dash cam in my car. I want that information in case some idiot runs a red light or turns in front of me.

Sorry for the loss of your car. But, this is a first, hearing of someone issued a speeding ticket due to a witness claiming the person was "going fast". Regardless, I hope it all works out for you!
