Hurst shifter installed with EPCO knob
I installed the Hurst shifter I bought years ago on sale, finally, about 1 month ago. It's a pain but I'd say the results are worth it, as others have said. Still not as good as the feeling of the 4th gen Camaro/Firebird Hurst shifter but hey, this is the newest we've got to work with today.
Definitely was worth it for me to buy an EPCO knob. You can customize it to whatever diameter you want, along with colors and a couple different fonts of shift pattern. I bought an 1-7/8" diameter, just like my 4th gen had in it. Plus, fits my hand better than the giant Hurst knob. Just Google it and you'll find their website. See my picture. I'm pretty happy with it. And if I ever become unhappy with it, I'm not putting the stock one back in. |

I just had mine installed last week. Night and day. Much firmer shift. Tight. Crisp. Much less shifter travel. Doesn't matter if you're comparing it to the stoc, SS shifter or the ss1le shifter. It's a completely different ball game. Wouldn't recommend it to a new driver or as a daily driver. However, if you are an enthusiast and enjoy feedback with crisp shifting, it is for you.

Yes, sounds much easier if engine/trans are out.
I went with the EPCO brand when I bought because I don't remember anyone else selling the 9/16" -18 thread size for the Hurst at that time. Now I see Speed Dawg has that thread size but they make you get the giant cue ball diameter ball, 2-1/8" if that's what you like. EPCO gives you many options for the diameter. I can't speak to the pistol grip. I just knew I wanted a ball. Yes difference is like Val said. I'm pretty happy with it. I don't drive it everyday but I've driven it to work for a week at a time with no issue. |

I definitely think the install is worth it. I just haven't felt compelled to do the work just yet. |

OP keep in mind that since Chevy sells a "short shifter" as an aftermarket part, (the one in your 1LE), they have a complete install guide, and you can provide them with the excellent installation guide provided by Hurst.
If you trust your dealer, you can take it there. And +1 on the EPCO ball! The stock shifter isn't bad, but I think the Hurst shifter is the single best mod I've made to the car.

Trans issues broke my heart because I knew how much of the car had to be violated to get it down. The silver lining in my $3.4k repair bill was taking out the sloppy oem and having the Hurst installed. If a person enjoys feedback and tight shifting, there is no better way to achieve it in this car. It's sad that MGW didn't make a shifter because it would be nice to have more than 2 options in total.
