Big discrepancy between Aeroforce gauge and dash gauge coolant temps

Dash Gauge says nothing to see here all is well - but Aeroforce plugged into OBD tells a different story. Car is cammed with headers and pulley. Also has an aluminum thermostat housing. Hot here in Phoenix but shouldn’t be running this warm just cruising.

Just get a Banks iDash Datamonster. You can program 1-6 different values to disply, comes with a micro-SD card slot for datalogging and it will show every parameter including E-Content as well as many more you'd have to dig into HPTuners to find.

Best of all... if gives you a screenshot any time a soft or hard code hits with a complete datalog automatically. You can also upfit it to rear analog as well as any other remote sensor data you wish.

To my understanding, the dash value isn't the actual sensor data, but a calculation based on other variables. The value on the AeroForce is the actual sensor data.

Edit: I guess I should say, dummy gauge. It is like a good/bad indication, not a real value. I could be wrong.

I think the Aeroforce is suspect. When my dash gauge is in that area (normal operating temp) hptuners datalogs match, showing anywhere from mid-180s to mid-190s

Can’t say for sure that the Aeroforce is correct but can say the dash gauge is rubbish.

Dash gauge is not too useful. Even with Scanner commanding about 190, and reading 190, the dash doesn’t move much.

I have yet to run the Aeroforce but it’s running off the CAN, no? So shouldn’t it be displaying what the ECM is using?

I've read from vehicle engineers that modern coolant gauges are intentionally slow to respond and don't respond to short peaks as to not constantly alarm or cause concern to the drivers. I wish they were a bit more accurate. My coolant gauge stays at the same spot practically all the time no matter how I'm driving and the outside temp. The oil temp gauge moves around more and will show higher temps if I drive it harder, but the coolant gauge stays put.

Once the coolant has reached operating temperature, the thermostat should regulate it to a near constant temp, so the gauge not moving much doesn't surprise me. Guess the programming is done in a way that hides smaller fluctuations while the thermostat opens and closes periodically.

If the cooling system can no longer cope with the thermal load, the gauge will probably start creeping upwards. (I say "probably" because that hasn't happened to me yet.)

230F seems high for around town driving. A few questions if I may...

1. what thermostat you are running?
2. Do you have HP Tuners?
3. Are you running the stock fan settings?

The camaro should fallow what most manufacturers do.

Temp gauge starts at the bottom. 80F is the first line usually.
180F is operating temp. They always show 10% less than half the gauge to psicologically make you think the engine is cold (people think about cold and hot as their body temp / feeling, nobody has automotive knowledge anymore).

After 235/240F the gauge starts to creep at a different ratio that is does from 32 to 180.
250f might be 3/4 and 260 100%.

then the gauge is dead from 180 to 240.

I understand the engineers. Back in the time and analog gauges were hard to trick like this. That's why we hear "that model used to run hot" and nobody says that anymore.
Last time OEM's made that mistake was with the C4 corvette. The coolant temp gauge goes to 3/4 all the time and the car is know for "overheating" when in reality is supposed to work at that temp.
