water in the trunk

So my car has been garage kept until recently. Trunk immediately got flooded after the first rain. If you take a look at the video, the harness gets pinched as the trunk closes. This happens every time with no exception. I will have to replace the trunk weatherstripping, but before I do I need to do something with the harness. I saw several posts with other having the same issue, is there any solution to address the issue other than installing a drain in the trunk and a humidity sensor? Such a crappy design, even if it does not get pinched, it rubs against the weatherstripping and eventually damages it.

Appreciate any suggestions.

thx

Yeah, nice work on that!

I'm going to have to check my 2017 to see if it is configured the same way, as I don't recall seeing my gasket deformed in that area.
My first thoughts would be to replace the gasket and reroute the wiring so it does not interfere with the gasket, which might mean cutting the trunk liner so wiring drops down more centrally.

Yea, will have to remove the liner and see what is going on. Was hoping somebody already came up with a solution to the problem at hand.

By the way, does anybody know if the weatherstripping comes with the adhesive already applied (like a self-stick application), or do I need to buy it separately?

thx

The wire harness on my 2016 convertible is routed farther away from the edge and weatherstripping. Maybe you can adjust yours to avoid getting pinched.

So I went out and did a similar video with my 2021. Comparing it to the OP video, it looks like Chevy may have changed the rigidity and/or angle of the wiring harness right where it comes out of the trim piece that's attached under the trunk lid. That portion of the harness angles away from the weatherstripping on my car.

Or maybe the wiring harness just loosens up at that point with time and miles?

Edit: I added screen captures from my video to show what I was trying to describe. They show the trunk closed, partially open, and fully open.

I will take the liner off today to investigate, but mine is not running almost perpendicular to the trunk when open as shown on Mark114 pictures, it basically running straight down and gets pinched EVERY TIME between the trunk and the weatherstripping. At this point i would need to re-dress the harness with a new wire loom as the old one is totally deformed. Thank you for the pictures, very helpful.

Get some 1/2" or 5/8" wire mold and some temflex tape... and make yourself a nice stiff section of that wire so it can't get pinched. Like that "factory mod" in the later years

EDIT: Went out and checked my car. My harness comes out of the trunk lid and immediately bends to the rear of the vehicle. reko19, your car's harness may have a broken piece of wire mold that's allowing it to point forward out of the trunk lid and then kink and get pinched in the rubber (red highlight in the screengrab from the first few seconds of your video). So adding the above "cast" with wire mold and tape should fix it for ya.

I also looked at the trunk liner on my 2017 hardtop.
The liner is slit and has a circular opening which accommodates the wiring harness and allows it to drop into the trunk without touching the gasket. The wire basically drops out of that bulge area. No gasket compression on my car.

Took the trunk liner off, removed old tape and wire loom from the harness. Old wireloom was completely crushed / deformed. Redid everything and created a new opening in the liner so the harness exits perpendicular to the trunk. First pic is old, second pick is new. It looks now similar to Mark's pic. Still need to check if I need to replace the weatherstripping.

Thanks OP for bringing this to my (our) attention.
Just checked my '17 coupe (early build) and it exits just as yours did! Comes right up against the weather stripping at full lift but hasn't been pinched yet. There is wear on the wire wrap but not on the weather stripping. I will take corrective measures. Thanks again!
