oil accumulation under lid of supercharger
Hey guys, considering purchasing a used 2023 ZL 1. I have read a couple articles from other social media, concerning oil accumulation under the lid of the supercharger after about 6 thousand miles on the odometer. Was wondering if this is something I need to be concerned about. Was planning on installing an oil separator, catch can, but it looks like you need to remove the top cover of the SC, to access the PVC valve. I'm a little leery of tearing apart the top end of the engine considering the car still has 28 months of factory warranty on it, really don't want to jeopardize my warranty by taking apart the blower. So, was wondering what other options I might have concerning an oil catch can. The car
only has 1420 miles on it, but really don't want any oil leaks at 6 or 7 thousand miles either. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks. |

Do you want to keep your warranty? I wouldn't touch it.

This! I personally have nothing against catch cans and I won't be putting one on my car. A guy I work with has a 2021 ZL1 with 24,000 miles and said he pulled his S/C lid off and had HARDLY any oil in there. He said 3 q-tips worth otherwise it was super clean. Take that for what it is I suppose. I've also heard of guys that have had "alot", but it's all subjective I suppose.

Nothing a little walnut blating won't fix! Maybe finish out warranty, get a cleaning then get a catch can?

Well, if I accumulate 3 q tips after 24.000 miles, that might add up to a tenth of a teaspoon after 100.000 miles, Lol. I'm guessing you have had no oil leak issues with yours, no idea of the mileage on your car, but thanks for the feedback on your coworkers' car.
Just out of curiosity, do you drive yours in the winter, would think the tires would be horrible in cold weather ? |

I pulled this photo from the ZL1 FB group in 2021. According to the person who posted the photo, it's the inside of his car's supercharger after 67,000 miles. The owner said the car was all stock and not babied.
OP I don't think you need to be too worried about oil accumulation while the car is still under warranty. Should you ever decide to do a high horsepower build, that's the time to think about oil accumulation and a catch can in my opinion. I don't think the cost/benefit is worth it on a stock ZL1.

![]() I have 830 miles on my 2023 ZL1 that I got September of 2022. No, my car gets stored from October-May and never driven in rain, snow or wet/cold conditions.

It's simple really. If you want to keep the powertrain warranty, don't fcuk with it. If you are not or don't care, go nuts and send it.

It's not so much the oil you see under the lid, that same oil has also already coated your supercharger bricks making their cooling less efficient, and oil that already passed on to the top of your valves. It's true on a stock ZL1, a catch can matters less, but once you start modifying one of these cars to produce more boost, a catch can becomes a much better investment. Having a catch can with a vent is even more important to reduce crankcase pressure. There's literally no downside to using a catch can other than warranty concerns which depends on your dealer.

I believe in catch can's from my Mustang Coyote experience but not with this car, i'm not pulling the S/C to get to it. If it was up top plug and play like my Coyote had been I would have done it. I have pulled the lid and removed the sound deadening plate and my S/C did have oil on it, about as much as was shared above.

Get the ZL1 if you want it is my advice. No worries with that low mileage.

Oil in the supercharger is normal. It's how the stock PCV setup works. It is also why the Mobil 1 oil was designed to not leave deposits in the valves so you won't have an issue there as long as you run Super Car oil.
When you increase boost you need a catch can because now you have more oil vapor than the stock setup can handle.
