Stupid question about upgrading to an SS down the line.

I’ve been thinking for over a year, now.

The 3.6L is great with good mod potential from Tracy Lewis Performance. BUT I’m longing for a V8, since, it’s going to be impossible to get one down the line with these geniuses in the government. Should have gotten a SS in 2017

How difficult will it be to find a good example of an SS maybe 2-3 years from now? For those who were around back in 2002, was it difficult to get a good car back then? I was 6 years old so I wasn’t shopping for a car

For those with experience, what’s your thoughts? I have a separate account/investments for saving.

Not important notes:

Unfortunately, the s650 GTs do not impress me from a handling perspective. Everything else, not bad. Corsa made a NICE exhaust system for them. Now, I haven’t tested a performance pack but from asking s650 owners the handling is still numb compared to Camaro for the PP cars.

I’m open to a C7 Corvette since my Camaro is no longer a daily driver. Although, C7 prices are insane.

I wasn’t paying over MSRP for a 24. My preferred build never got accepted.

When the Camaro ended production in 2002, no, it wasn't hard to find a nice used Z28 or SS a couple years later.

It's not even hard now. You can still buy a practically new 4th Gen if you're willing to spend $35k on a 22 year old car which may or may not go up in value. Non-museum examples with low miles are cheap. $20k or under for a nice driver-quality SS with 25-50k miles.

There are about a million low-mile 5th gen SS for sale, and they're a bargain. I don't expect 6th gens to be rare for quite a long time to come.

That said, you're potentially overthinking this if you've been pondering it for a year, and are waiting another couple years to buy. Just do it. I hate to say it, most 6th gen SS are not rare or special cars, as much as we love them.

There are some sticky hands holding on to the last few new 2024's for sale. Should have done like I did in 2023 and bought well under MSRP

Thank you!

Dude, I’m kicking myself for not taking that new Shadow Gray 2023 2SS 1LE from Bomnin Chevrolet, in August, last year. GM employee discount AND +2k off, 49k out the door, not including that they were going to give me 25k for my car, and I passed on it.

Should have bought an SS in 2017

Damn I picked up a shadow gray 2ss 1le in august and I would have LOVED to get that deal! I barely paid below msrp.

Anyway to answer your question it won’t be hard. 2002 was a different time. Camaro’s and trans am’s sold so poorly you couldn’t give them away back then. It won’t be hard at all to get a 6th Gen SS in only 2-3 years. Thousands were produced. They will continue to depreciate the next 2-3 years. Cars don’t typically appreciate that early after their lifecycles. That tends to happen later on down the road.

I KICKED myself hard on that one. I gotta find the email but yeah they gave some insane discounts on 23s that were late produced. I passed because “oh I’d like the riptide blue”.

They do have some 24s that are discounted well but not what I’m looking for, plus too early right now, need to focus on other stuff rather than buying new toys, haha.

Hey I think I saw your car when I was at Bomnin last year picking up my ZL1 at the same time! It sure was pretty!

It made me almost wish I had tried harder for a 1LE ZL1 but at my age I wasn't thrilled at not having mag ride lol.

Had it been less cloudy you might have bought it. Shadow gray has a ton of blue in it in certain lighting. I actually picked this color because I thought the blue gray tone it has looked cooler than riverside and rapid blue. Hyper blue is a gorgeous color so I understand not wanting to go away from it but I think the shadow gray would have grown on you. Riptide looked nice as well but I don’t think I like it enough to have paid 3k+ extra for a 24. If my order didn’t go through for a 23 I probably would be in a Supra right now.

I wouldn't worry at all about finding a nice 6th gen SS 5 years from now. There are plenty of them out there.

After 2002 you could find lots of Z28's and SS's for sale for good prices for another 6-8 years or so. After that, they were still around and priced well, just had to look a little harder. It's just now that they are starting to go up in value, but really even the nicest ones are barely bringing their original MSRP. With 20 years of inflation, they are still a deal to buy.

Don't worry about it. Buy one when you are ready. You'll be able to find what you want.

The one color I REALLY liked from 19-23 was Shadow Gray with the tinted lamps. Chefs kiss.the only reasons I didn’t get that car was “do I really NEED the 1LE for a street car and that new blue looks like hyper blue”. Dumb est choice ever lol.

Nevertheless it’s not a big deal, I’m sure someone will sell their shadow gray SS down the line somewhere in this country.

I am thinking about a 1LE. We have a car club at my company and they go to the FIRM here in north Florida for track days. A 1LE would be perfect for that.
