Had a hard time shifting into first the other day (M6)

So its a nice 75° day, and I am taking my car to get the tint redone on the front windshield due to some grainyness right in my line of sight.

I try to shift into first after starting her up and... I couldn't get it to go in!

I have noticed that shifting into first is generally a little "tougher" than the other gears, but I thought this was par for the course as I have nothing to compare it to. However not being able to get it into first at all was a bit weird.

After some jiggling and playing around it eventually went in and I was able to drive like normal, but this was a bit concerning in the moment.

Is this to be expected? Or is this another item to potentially have added to my list when I get it to the dealership?

I'm not speaking from experience, but I would personally not consider this normal, as it definitely doesn't sound right, so yes I would certainly have it checked.

Roger that. I'm about one fill up away from being fully broken in, I'm at about 1350 miles right now, I was planning on doing the rear end juice and potentially the transmission juice, but I'll have the dealership check it out first.

Oh wow, I totally missed that your car is brand new! I haven't had any gear shifting issue in over 14k miles so far (knocking on wood!).

That's what she said (Sorry.....)

I have a bit of trouble getting it into second when cold (only with ambient temp like around 10°C or less). Hopefully that's normal.. it kinda sounded like it was with these transmissions. Is this right, or should I also get mine checked?

Depending on your description as to "couldn't get it to go in 1st gear", that is quite normal behavior for manual transmissions on occasions. I've been driving manual vehicles for over 40 years and it happens to each and everyone of them. If the car is sitting still regardless of whether it's running or not there is always a chance that 1st gear might not line up correctly. You could try putting it in second gear then go back to first to re-align the gears. Sometimes it won't go all the way into gear and if that happens it will jump out when you try to move the car. To put it in simple terms....It's a manual transmission.

The other option is to allow your car to drift ever so slightly so it will engage.

every manual car I have had this happens time to time. Its not just lined up. Move it around in other gears and then push back to first and it will slide right in

start the car with it in gear to eliminate that problem.

You can't start the car with it in gear if you can't get it in gear. The real way is keeping it in first gear(or reverse) when you shut the car off. My car is always in one or the other when parked depending on the grade.

It is absolutely not normal ....Clearing the gear when the car is off and not being able to get it in gear once started or upon downshift/upshift are 2 completely different things. i'm just going to leave this right here.

Gm's dirty little secret. Go easy on your gear shifting guys tremec or no, the gearbox is made of glass, and the brakes made of sugar... Beware. Can you tell i'm bitter about the 5k brake job i just paid for? They didn't even put the good brake fluid in, i had to get it rebled. Also just want to mention Ford said the MT82 unable to shift into third was normal... Now there's lawsuits.

definitely pretty tough to get into 1st gear until the car is fully warmed up in my experience, esp at cooler temps. report back what the dealership says, but my guess is they will say it's normal.
