GM Extended Warranty - Worth it or not?
Are there enough issues past the standard warranty period that I should consider getting one? I realize that anything can happen at any time, but I'm just curious what Gen 6 owners have experienced.
On my last car the extended warranty paid for itself 8 times over, so I definitely lucked out on that one. |

Crap shoot... I've never purchased an extended warranty on any auto or motorcycle and I've never needed one. So any purchase would have been a complete waste of money for me.

Speaking from the standpoint of a dealership service advisor, the GMPP plans were the best and easiest to work with, covered the most stuff with less hassle compared to other companies you never heard of. Platinum damn near covered everything.
Of course, that was before those unknown companies began the phone wars. THAT'S how old I am

I got it ,dont know if it was a dealer one or one threw GM, but so far its been worth it. My car is only a summer/weekend ride for me so i got a low milage but longer time frame 7 year 70,000kms and im in year 3 and at around 20,000kms.
i just had to have a bunch or wiring harness work done and they just replaced the whole harness |

You had the whole harness replaced on a 3 year old car. As in the main harness?

If you don’t Dick around with your car its worth it, that’s why I didn’t bother.

Put your extended warranty money into a savings account.

After 50 cars, I’ve only done the GM Protection Plan twice - both for cars I planned to keep low mileage and for years past the 36-month OEM warranty. (Imagine being out-of-pocket $3,600 to replace a HVAC control on a 2007 C6 after 6 years…) For the 2018 1SS 1LE, after 4 years it was a selling point for the guy who bought the car. He paid more for the car, and I got most of the original cost prorated and returned to me. So, for one car, it was worth it and for the other car, it really didn’t cost me anything. Even so, just by nature I’m opposed to extended warranties on any product.

Worth it if you have a good dealer and want to keep it for a long time.
For me it is like rolling the D20... 1 - is critical miss and 20 is critical hit - you pick your element.

I went for a 100k warranty and got it for around $1500 on my Camaro.
It helped out on my Wrangler that was in the shop all of the time and needed a ton of warranty repairs. Never needed it on a Toyota or Lexus. Went for it on the Camaro, since I was concerned about the convertible top. May end up getting on my Duramax turbo diesel. Concerned about the cost of repairs and I drive my truck the most. |

The extended warranty was worth it on my '02 Porsche 911 Carrera and '14 Corvette Z51 that most of the time were at the repair shop for expensive repairs, but I never recall of having to use it on 3 Honda vehicles that we owned, an Infiniti, 2 Camaros and a Mustang I owned. For the Honda cars I not even consider it necessary to get it.

Mine spends more time at the dealer than in my garage so I would say yes. My 2017 has less than 7K miles on it and I have more than $5K billed to the extended warranty already.
I stopped counting how many times it was in under the factory warranty before it expired. As much fun as these cars are to drive, and as much as I love my 50th, they are huge piles of crap to own. Get the warranty. I paid $1260 for the 72/100K plan. It was worth it! |
