Not why I got a ZL1...but still...

I just got back from a 600 mile road trip in my new ZL1. About 500 miles on the ODO when I started. The trip consisted of some highway, some back roads at 35-55 mph, and some steep climbs and windy roads in the Berkshires, along with stop and go weekend traffic out and back. On the highway, I was between 70 and 80 mph when not confined by traffic.

The result was that my mpg went up from 18 at the start to 20+ by the end. This rivals my 2010 SS, the difference being that the ZL1 has 650 hp vs the SS's 400 hp.

So what exactly is the gas guzzler tax for?

I can't comment without making a snarky political comment...

Damn good point. My ZL1 gets incredible mileage, but the OUR government is hell bent on saving the world and are the cause for this tax. If we aren't driving a 4 cylinder shit box, then we're labeled gas guzzlers. IOW, any car that doesn't get a combined 22.5mpg.

The auto makers aren't going to push back on this either (Especially Mary Barra), because they love the government subsidies.

So we get to pay it...with money we've already been taxed on.

Just returned from a 1500 mile road trip in my new ZL1 and I was pleasantly surprised to average 20 mpg. Since I was in break in mode I spent a lot of time driving with variable speed, rolling between 2000 and 3500rpm and never touched cruise control.

My 16 4Runner has never gotten better than 19mpg on highway road trips and I've always driven it like a grandpa.

I won't go into the political aspects either, but the fact is that anything with a fuel economy below 22.5 mpg is a "guzzler" according to the federal government: https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-4...ion-600.513-08

This only applies to passenger cars, so that 4Runner of yours and all its SUV/truck kinfolk can suck down as much they want and you still won't pay this tax.

My SS, far beyond stock ZL1 power, gets 25-26 mpg on the highway

I'm not going to get into the politics of the tax, but I wonder how representative the EPA mileage is of normal driving.

I do better than the EPA on every car I drive, even cars I use as grocery getters. For example, my current grocery getter is a 2016 Trax, rated at 32 mpg combined. Mine is at 34.5 mpg and its average speed over its life is 28 mph, so plenty of time in traffic.

It's amazing that, even living in a congested area with lots of traffic delays, hilly terrain, and cold winters, I'm always better than the EPA rating. I did read in Car and Diver that many ICE cars best the EPA rating by a bit, but EVs almost all fall short of EPA range. Tesla in particular is 30% below! Hmmm....

I think its very common for actual real world MPG to exceed the EPA's test scenarios.

I got 25mpg on the way to Bowling Green Saturday morning.

Congratulations on your ZL1 purchase Rock-It Man and don’t think you will have any regrets. I know I don’t since upgrading in 2019 to a slightly used ZL1 from a 2016 2SS! Enjoy that hotrod ZL1.
