when ebrake is engaged, no mechanism noise and brake pedal doesn't move
On my 2022 SS 1LE, when I engage my e-brake there is no mechanical / motor actuator noise, and the brake pedal doesn't move. Basically besides the PARK light, there is no other way I can really tell if it is engaged or not.
On my nephew's 2022 LT1, when I engage his e-brake, his brake pedal drops a little and you can hear the actuator kick on - you definitely know the e-brake has been engaged. Is this normal between models? Also his clutch feels lighter even though we have the same engine and transmission.

I definitely hear my motor noise when I do it on my 22 1LE. Park your car in neutral and engage the brake, then try to push the car. Maybe it's broken.

LT1 has calipers with screwed pistons. The electric motor moves the piston forward and engages the brake pads. In this case the fluid is also moving and you will feel it in the pedal. They are complete different systems. |

I can't see I've ever felt the brake pedal move in my SS, and I definitely hear the electric controller engaging the system when it's applied.

Electronic Parking Brake Description (J77, Cable Puller)
Vehicles with the electric parking brake have a switch in the center console, which takes the place of the manual parking brake system, the foot pedal and release handle. In case of insufficient electrical power, the electric parking brake cannot be applied or released. Occasionally, the electronic parking brake will automatically apply when the vehicle is not moving. The electronic parking brake performs a operational check every 50 key cycles. When this check is being performed, the park brake light on the instrument cluster becomes illuminated. This function does not affect the normal operation of the vehicle. Electric Parking Brake Control Module The parking brake control module has an internal motor, apply actuator, release actuator, and temperature sensor. The parking brake control module also contains the logic for applying and releasing the parking brake when commanded by the park brake control switch. When the parking brake control module receives a signal from the switch the internal circuit board temperature is checked to verify it is within operating range before the control module performs the requested operation. The electric parking brake module receives hard wired signals from the apply/release switch and communication enable. The electric parking brake module receives wheel speed sensor signals, engine torque, gear information, brake pedal signal, and etc. through GM-LAN. Electric Parking Brake Apply The electric parking brake can be applied any time the vehicle is stopped or in motion. The electric parking brake is applied by momentarily lifting up on the park brake control switch. The red park brake light will momentarily flash while the parking brake is being applied. Once fully applied, the red park brake light will turn on. If the electric parking brake is applied while the vehicle is in motion, a chime will sound, and the message "Release Park Brake Switch" will be displayed. If the red park brake light is flashing, the electric parking brake is only partially applied or released, or there is a problem with the electric parking brake. The message "Service Park Brake" will be displayed. Electric Parking Brake Release To release the electric parking brake, turn the ignition switch to the ON or RUN position, apply and hold the brake pedal, and push down momentarily on the park brake control switch. When the electric parking brake is released the red park brake light turns off. The electric parking brake can be used to prevent roll back for vehicles with a manual transmission taking off on a hill. In a situation where no roll back is desired, an applied electric parking brake will allow both feet to be used for the clutch and accelerator pedals in preparation for starting the vehicle moving in the intended direction. In this situation, perform the normal clutch and accelerator actions required to begin moving the vehicle. There is no need to push the switch to release the electric parking brake. To disable this feature lift and hold the park brake control switch while the vehicle is in motion, this will keep the electric parking brake applied. Manual Parking Brake Cable Tension Release If the park brake cable tension cannot be released under normal mode of operation, it can be released manually. The manual release capability will make it possible for the driver to transfer the vehicle into a movable state in the case of a failure of the electric parking brake system. The procedure can be found in the Repair Instructions, Parking Brake Cable Adjuster Disabling procedure. Electronic Parking Brake Description (J71, Motor on Caliper) Vehicles with the electric parking brake have a switch in the center console or on the dash, which takes the place of the manual parking brake system, the foot pedal and release handle. In case of insufficient electrical power, the electric parking brake cannot be applied or released. Electronic Brake Control Module/Brake System Control Module The parking brake function is integrated into the Electronic Brake Control Module/Brake System Control Module. The module contains the logic for applying and releasing the parking brake when commanded by the Park Brake Switch. When the Park Brake Switch is pulled, a signal is sent to the Electronic Brake Control Module which will supply 12 V to the apply control circuits and ground to the release control circuits which will cause the left and right park brake actuators to activate causing the park brakes to engage. When the Park Brake Switch is pressed, a signal is sent to the Electronic Brake Control Module which will supply 12 V to the released control circuits and ground to the apply control circuits which will cause the left and right park brake actuators to activate causing the park brakes to release. In some vehicles, the Park Brake Switch is a push-button style switch. When the switch is pressed, the park brakes are commanded to either apply or release based off of their current position. The Electronic Brake Control Module/Brake System Control Module will diagnose the park brake motor circuits to verify that they are functioning properly. The park brake motor circuits are used to command actuator motor operation, which will apply and release the parking brake. These circuits are used to activate the actuator, which applies or releases pressure on the caliper pistons, ultimately applying and releasing the park brake. The Park Brake Motor Position Sensor is an internal sensor to the park brake actuator, this sensor is used to monitor the park brake motor position. Electric Parking Brake Apply The electric parking brake can be applied any time the vehicle is stopped or in motion. The electric parking brake is applied by momentarily operating the park brake control switch. The red park brake light will momentarily flash while the parking brake is being applied. Once fully applied, the red park brake light will turn on. If the electric parking brake is applied while the vehicle is in motion, the vehicle will decelerate as long as the switch is being operated. If the switch is operated until the vehicle comes to a stop, the park brake will remain applied. If the red park brake light is flashing, the electric parking brake is only partially applied or released, or there is a problem with the electric parking brake. A DIC message will display. The vehicle may automatically apply the electric parking brake in some situations when the vehicle is not moving. This is normal, and is done to periodically check the correct operation of the electric parking brake system. Electric Parking Brake Release To release the electric parking brake, turn the ignition switch to the ON or RUN position, apply and hold the brake pedal, and push down momentarily on the park brake control switch. When the electric parking brake is released the red park brake light turns off. Automatic Electric Parking Brake Release The parking brake will automatically release if the vehicle is running, placed into gear, and an attempt is made to drive away. Avoid rapid acceleration when the parking brake is applied to preserve parking brake lining life.

I would go to a not very steep hill and see if the car rolls. My driveway has maybe a 15% incline and that is enough to see if the parking brake is holding. I know from using the brake while I empty my mailbox every night. Rarely I don't pull the switch all the way and the car will be rolling when I open the door! Same. I bought my Camaro two days ago, and that's one of the first things I noticed when I drove it off the lot. I had a 2019 Civic Si with an e-brake, and it had the distinct noise and feel you describe when it engaged.

No one has mentioned why there's a difference between between these setups: Brembo brakes. It's likely the Brembo calipers found on the rears of the 1SS and above do not have the provisions for driving the pads mechanically, so they had to use an internal drum brake that has no interaction with the Brembo caliper.

I do prefer the internal drum brake version, as it simplifies changing pads. As TP2SS points out, the other variant has special calipers with a motorized screw plunger. This has to be backed out and recalibrated depending on the car. The dealers do it electronically, but there are work-arounds to do it manually by disassembling the caliper.
Another way you can sense if the e-brake is engaging is just feel the car when you park on uneven pavement. I can feel the brakes grab on a slightly not level parking lot. |

This system it's been around since the 80's, but with cable pullers instead of motors. The issue with the brembo's is that they have 4 pistons so you would need 4 motors and the wheel is on the way... Therefore drum and shoes is the only way. |

He noted SS's have that but not WHY. The why is Brembos. Maybe folks with non SS's don't know the SS's have Brembos on all 4, or even that a Brembo is a completely different design of caliper.
