Unknown Transmission Noise

Worried about this noise that seems to get louder as temps increase. Noise is only noticeable parked at idle (car is too loud to hear it otherwise) and when clutch is release. When clutch is depressed, noise goes away. https://youtube.com/shorts/mtDmPyaGg6Y?feature=share

There is also a subtle whine coming from the transmission when I increase throttle from idle, while sitting still.

Pretty hard to pick up the sound change in the video, but maybe a throwout bearing going bad? How many miles on the clock and how much time do you spend in stop and go traffic?

25k miles, I thought it’d be the throwout bearing at first, but since it happens when the clutch is RELEASED, I don’t think it. All I can think it would be is the input shaft bearing. Dealer swears they don’t hear anything. I could be crazy. Taking back on Monday to have their “transmission specialist” take a look.

IMO, that's completely normal. It's the input shaft and gears spinning inside the trans while it's in neutral and the clutch is out. Over 20+ years of driving and wrenching on nothing but manuals and they all do that to a certain extent. Some makes and models make more noise than others, but I definitely wouldn't think twice about your case. You also say it gets louder as temps increase, which also makes sense in that as the fluid in the trans gets hotter and thins somewhat you are going to hear more gear whine.

I appreciate it. That’s reassuring. I’m still going to let my local dealer’s transmission specialist take a listen, that way if they say it’s good, then something DOES happen to it, I’ve got it in writing that I said I thought there was an issue. The only reason I’m concerned at all is because I’m getting the car tuned on Thursday, so they warranty will be pretty much gone.

Update: Local dealer’s “specialist” said he could hear the noise I described, but it was very faint. He said that the only thing he thought it could be was the input shaft bearing and that he could order parts to replace them and see if the noise went away, but it would take weeks for them to get here. (Worth noting that the inspection was not visual; audio only) They basically told me to drive it until it got worse, which is a kind of response I don’t really like.

The only reason that I am opposed to this is because I had an appointment for Thursday to go get my car dyno tuned with some new parts, obviously voiding the warranty if a repair needed to be done after I did that.

So new question. Since it is on the record that I brought up the issue to the dealer, and they deemed it not bad enough to deal with now. What are the odds the dealer would cover it if symptoms worsen but by then I have had the car tuned. Would they refuse warranty repair instantly?

I can mention dealer by name if anyone would like but I felt it didn’t matter for now. However it is in the San Antonio area.

The dealer wants the most money from whoever. If your car is tuned that means more money from you for a fix. A warranty repair would be drawn out and pay less to the dealer as the manufacturer pays a minimum rate for all warranty work. Any work out of warranty is charged at the rate of whatever discretion the service department desires. I would not tune your car if you expect any warranty work to be honored. But if you have a great dealer who knows

I don't hear the noise in the video but based on what you are saying I would not have it tuned until I tore it down and looked at it. Personally I don't do tunes and engine mods until after the warranty is over.

2 nd that. Are the parts installed, if not MO hold off, your parts and tune. Your giving up a lot kicking you warranty out the door.
Now if you can pay out of pocket for warranty work, your the one that has to assist your situation .

Yeah nothing is installed yet. Got myself all hyped up about it too. I, unfortunately, cannot afford to have a transmission rebuilt if it ends up needing it. The worst part is, the "specialist" wasn't even sure if new bearings would fix it, as he didn't really know what exactly was causing the noise. I guess there isn't really a way to know without tearing into it. So I could be worried about nothing.

Any chance you could take a ride in a different 6th Gen manual SS camaro to see if that one makes noise too?

If I could find someone in the San Antonio area with one, that would be a great idea. The noise could very well just sound bad to me because I'm a hypochondriac when it comes to this stuff.

Drive your car, it's been to the Dealership, they have a record of the point of concern, you have a warranty . If there's a problem it's most likely covered . You haven't installed your parts to void the warranty. Sounds like your not willing to throw away your warranty, as a lot of us that are still under the umbrella.
