What is this thing?

Hello, I was driving today and had a small rubber stopper (?) fall onto my feet from the driver side footwell. I can't figure out for the life of me where this is supposed to go or what it is supposed to do. Hoping that randomly someone else has had this happen or worked on the car enough to know.

If that is the piece I think it is, I had the same thing happen on my 2016! It slides into a slot at the top of the accelerator pedal assembly. Mine came off a few times and I finally mentioned it as a warranty concern. They first tried to glue it back in, it came out again, and they replaced the whole pedal assembly under warranty (which seemed like overkill, but that piece never came off again).

I'll follow up with a couple photos from my old phone. As I recall, the piece is molded so it will only fit one way.

Here are photos with the rubber bumper in place and removed. That thick tab that is facing upwards in your photo runs horizontally along the top end (which is in back of the rubber piece as depicted in my photo). There is a slot for that tab in the side of the pedal assembly which establishes the one-way orientation for the piece.
