Need 245/40-20 Tires (non run flat 20')
Any recommendations appreciated. The run flats I have are noisy and wore out fast even with rotations :(

The Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and Continental ExtremeContact Sport are still the best low-compromise summer street tires, the PS4S has remained undefeated as a summer street tire since it was first introduced in 2017. New contenders (including the PS5/PS5S and ECF etc) with varying compromises are released on a regular basis, so this may change soon.
If you consider them too expensive or unnecessary for your application, several members had success with second tier alternatives such as the Firehawk Indy 500 that are not as excellent but much cheaper, most people may not care for somewhat worse dry/wet traction, hydroplaning resistance or tire noise. This assumes you want high performance summer tires; if you want high performance all-seasons, that's a different discussion. I have no experience with those, although both Michelin and Continental are typically said to have great offerings there as well, with Continental having a slight edge.

In KC, if the OP is going to drive year-round he will either need all-seasons or a separate set of wheels and tires for winter. For a one-tire, all-season solution, the two best right now are the Michelin Pilot Sport All-Season 4 and the Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06+. The latter are cheaper and just as good in terms of quality. I suggest you read the Tire Rack tests (they ran both against each other plus two others) to see which is best for your, but you can't go wrong with either.

Well follow up , went to have my REAR set put on and asked to check my front tires, ofcourse he said i should get them replaced also. THankfully they had a better millage warranty on them and i was able to get another set of COntinentals for the front for almost half off. Had those installed yesterday and so far so good. Ill give a further update in a week or soo. Check Directtire , they are very good to work with, especially with their certificates for wheel damage!

When I first got my car (new) I realized the harsh ride was partially due to the run-flats. Then, the road noise became more apparent with mileage.
I figured that when they wear out, I'll replace with non-run-flat all season tires. I only put 22k miles on in 7 years! They are only about 1/2 worn out! 5/32" left. At that rate, the tires will need to be replace due to age, rather than mileage. And all that time spent with harsh riding, noisy tires. On the PLUS SIDE; the Goodyear Eagle F1 AS tires have GREAT turn-in response and overall grip...in the dry. Stiff sidewalls help that. I went with Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06+ tires. I knew to expect an immediate difference in road noise, ride AND steering response. I pretty much NEVER like new tires when they are first installed! They usually need a few (5?) thousand miles to feel right. The noise level and ride are a lot better. The steering response is very disappointing, but in line with how new tires generally feel (due to deep, squishy tread, etc.) I miss the quick turn-in and grip...at this point. A pretty squirrely/floaty feeling tire on higher-speed curves. Unsettling. 35psi F&R. I now only have about 300 miles on them, and they are starting to "sing" a little around 30-40mph while driving on smooth black-top roads. The original tires were not showing any signs of abnormal wear patterns. Is this just a characteristic trait of the tread pattern? Does it get worse? How many miles of break-in do they need to feel like the great tire it is supposed to be? Last edited by LtColumbo; 10-10-2024 at 05:10 PM. |

I've only got 660 miles on the tires now. I did have the alignment checked and it was only very slightly off on the L-R. Had a 4-wheel alignment done.
The singing noise is still there. I have not read anywhere that this is a known characteristic of these tires. I am beyond the "60-day satisfaction guarantee," but I will email Continental and see what they say. |

There seems to be no interest on this concern on this forum. But here goes!
Continental said, "Noise is kind of a subjective topic. What you may hear may not be heard by some one else. We don't inherently produce noisy tires." As a "goodwill gesture," they offered me 50% of my original purchase price towards another set of Continental tires. This for tires that still measured 9/32 tread depth! This was going to cost me over $540! I would be much better off selling them myself! But I won't do that. Grin 'n bear it. These just may be my first and last set of Continental Tires. |

I don't have any experience with the all-season variant of these Continental tires (and perhaps many others also use summer tires, hence the relative lack of comments), but it's quite unfortunate that you're experiencing this noise... obviously not everyone is equally sensitive to it, so I can understand Continental's position as well. Tough spot.

I'm 72 years old and have been buying tires for over 50 years. I've never had a problem with noisy new tires! The kind of noise these are making is like what happens near the end of tire life! It is not "road noise." Really more like an uneven treadwear pattern (but without any wear!) or just poor tread design. The dealer gave the usual suggestion of "turning up the radio." I lived with GY run-flats for 7 years. I guess I can live with these!

You're pretty resilient if you were able to live with those Goodyears for 7 years
Not sure if this is still an option because it'd cost you $$$, but if I lived in Santa Clarita, I'd switch to extreme performance summer tires in a heartbeat You don't even have winter there to speak of. Nobody complains about the Conti ExtremeContact Sport 02s, and my Micheling Pilot Sport 4S tires are the absolute best, these are both 3-season tires, I can drive on them safely all the way down to 36-38 degrees. Just replaced my previous set from 2019, and these new 2024 units have even more dry grip, are dead silent and their hdyroplaning resistance is surreal, which is good to have here near the Smoky Mountains.

I had several different brands and types of tires on my 2002 WRX. (Kept that about 13 years/156k miles.) That includes Bridgestone SO3 Maximum Performance Summer tires! Pretty stiff riding, lots of road noise, but tremendous grip and steering response!
That is until one winter morning, I left my girlfriend's house and drove 7 miles to the freeway onramp. Ambient temp was about 20F. Onramp was curved and banked, taking it easy, but still lost traction! WOW! That was too easy! It wasn't black ice. It was just that the tires were still too cold! They lasted about 20k miles. I enjoyed the experience of summer tires. But I didn't get them again. I'm sure they have gotten better over the past 2 decades! I'm retired and don't commute. That's why the low mileage on my car. I also have 2 motorcycles that I actually put more recreational miles on than the Camaro. SoCal! |
