Good gas vs bad gas?

I really wish there was a way to tell if a gas station has good gas or bad gas.

TLDR: I work 75 miles away one way. So I drive on average 150-200+ miles/day. Lately filling up with 93 at my work location I've noticed a marked decline in miles per gallon. 22mpg with bad gas and no real change in how I drive.

Has been this way for almost a month now. So I went and filled up at the gas station I normally use when I was getting 25mpg on the freeway.

I ran one full tank through then just filled up again yesterday. Drove to work this morning and I am back to 25mpg. Apparently my car really likes Shell V-Power 93 pump.

Now I am moving soon and have to run through the process all over again when I move. Granted closer to work but meh.

Anyone else have this problem trying to find good gas?

Shell and Exxon/Mobil have been consistently good IMO.

I usually stick with Shell or BP, they have been pretty dependable, and are Top Tier rated.

Branded(Exxon, Shell, Chevron) gas does typically give better mileage than unbranded(Costco, etc). 3 mpg is pretty impressive of a difference.

FYI, all the base gasoline is exactly the same and comes from the same source as all gas, but the additives do make a marked difference in performance.

I work for one of the big 3, and I find Chevron gives me the best mileage. I don't work for Chevron though, so I hope my boss doesn't find out HAHA.

Nice ty

There is a Shell right down the street from where I'll be moving to.

Does this site include searches for our corn fed hussies? IF not I do have a link for E85 station locations. I haven't checked that shell yet if it has E85

I am shocked to see that BP/Amoco is not in the top tier list anymore

I had my oil changed recently before this happened. Was worried they put the wrong oil in.

This, but before we had the luxury of the "webby-webs", best way was to fill up exclusively with one brand/station for a few fillups and then another station for a few fillups.

I took a trip to west Texas last year and was really amazed by how different the gas quality was in DFW vs some hole in the wall gas station near big bend national park. I think my range went from near 500 miles to about 260 on a full tank going from reliable shell vs some no name brand.

One word of caution, I went to one gas station that I thought was a shell station with the color scheme only to find out that it was a former shell station and was using other gas. I was tipped off when my shell rewards didn't update after my purchase.

Yes. That's about a 10% difference in fuel economy. I would not attribute that to fuel alone. Driving style, tire pressure, etc. as well as fuel. Fuel would probably be lowest on my list of factors.

Cruise control at 78mph with the occasional rush of windspeed measuring 100+mph.

Highway driving

Tire pressure 35 cold 37-38 hot (stock wheels and tires atm but if it matters I got the same mileage with my summer wheels and tires and up to 20mpg with E85)

Same driving style, and gas mileage went down by 3mpg after my oil change. The only other change in habit was where I was filling my tank.

I drive 600miles/week btw.

I think its a safe bet to say the fuel helped. Since my normal gas mileage was 25mpg before my oil change went down to 22mpg, then back up to 25mpg after I switched back to Shell gas by the second full tank.

Edit: I'll test it more when I drive home from work today drive more normal see if I can maintain 25mpg.

Just to compare We use Costco for our old Camry. No mpg difference to chevron. It’s top tier gas. A ss 1le friend and who races his car and is a manager at Costco sees no difference in mpg and performance. But we do only have kali 91 only so that good be a difference we can’t overcome.

Yep, Costco is considered top tier fuel.

By your own statement, "all" gasoline starts out the same and differs only by additives. There are plenty of articles out there, and some heated debates here as well, that will show that even the additives don't differ except in very select cases. The differences in fuel are octane and the AMOUNT of detergents added into the fuel.

Costco is Top Tier which means the percentage content of additives meets the minimum levels. It's all I run in ALL of my vehicles and the only time I ever find variance in MPG that isn't directly the result of driving habits is when there is changeover between summer blend and winter blend fuels (winter blend fuels are much lower MPG compared to summer blend fuels).

Agreed. As the car ages and parts wear in a bit more or wear down more (like tires), changes in road conditions and tire temps and pressures, etc. - everything starts to add up to something noticeable.

I use Costco 87 in my truck (Silverado with current gen 5.3L) and 93 in the other two vehicles as they both require premium. Zero issues with MPG and when she fills her car somewhere OTHER than Costco, there's never a difference in MPG.

I track fuel consumption across all of them with Fuelly because the dash info is wrong 100% of the time. My numbers are calculated over tens of thousands of miles of driving based on recording every single fill-up.
