short drive - oil temp?

kinda made an odd decision to trade my daily for an SS 1LE, and now as winter in Chicago arrives I'm seeing my errors

Basically my commute is 2 miles and the oil temp is not even cracking 100 degrees if I do drive right away. I'm left wondering if I should just baby it cold and avoid the extra heat cycles, or let it warm up. I do intend to keep this car for a long time both for track use and as a daily, otherwise id say f*** it and go.

those of you with short commutes or who are know these cars super well, what are you doing? Any suggestions?

Mines not a daily but I would suggest plugging in the block heater. It will make a difference for sure. The engine will have some temp right away opposed to being stone cold. Plus the defroster will start to work pretty much instantly
That’s if the car is equipped with a block heater. I would t be surprised if it is. I have to look at mine to see if I have one

I would recommend just warming it up for 30 seconds to a minute when starting, drive normally and shut it down when you get where you're going. At 2 miles, this is severe service and your maintenance will need to reflect this, but idling it warm won't change or help that and will just waste gas, add engine hours.

Of course, you can't run it hard until it's fully warmed up so this was a questionable choice for a daily as you note- although you can always take a nice 5-10 mile route to work it out on some days

It will be important to drive it a bit once fully warmed up, to get the condensation out of the crank case. So if no block heater option, then let the car idle for 2 mins before you drive or add some distance to your commute. Pull up the oil temp menu on the DIC Perfomance sub-menu (do not use coolant temp as a surrogate, as that heats up before the oil does), and make sure you drive a few minutes once the oil gets to 200 F before shutting it down.

The oil will handle things fine, but I suspect the algorithm will trigger a shorter change interval.
Block heater is a nice idea.
No engine powered car is going to be happy with that short commute. The exhaust will have pooled water for sure.
Maybe electric time?

Perhaps it’s time to take the bus. Never in my life thought too short a drive in a sports car would be a problem

Yep. That's an odd problem to have, but normally a good thing. Maybe this is your opportunity to "go green." Bus, bike, electric scooter, etc.

I had the same problem however my drive wasn’t as short. If you can take a longer way or just drive your car around for 15 mins before heading to work I would do that. Someone mentioned biking to work. 2 miles is certainly close enough but that will **** when it snows or is super cold. If the budget allows, I would maybe get a <5k beater for going to work and parking in Chicago.

I drive 3.5 miles to work. I don't beat on the car until its at least a little bit warm. Other than that I don't worry about it because most mornings or afternoons, I am just driving normally.

Now if I am going to be doing spirited driving, I let the car get completely up to temp.

My wife has a newer impala. She only drives about three miles one way to work everyday too. The oil life monitor in the car, was asking us to change the oil about every 4 months due to the fact she drove it so little.

Could always stick on a wolverine oil pan heater.

I had one on my beater Subaru and the radiant heat would melt the snow off the hood.

maybe use a lighter oil in the winter that can warm up quicker?

The 2021 V8s like OP has already come factory filled with 0W-40 oil. I don't think a W (winter) viscosity rating lighter than 0 currently exists for motor oil.
