Saw this locally in Houston from a zl1 owner.

It looks like MTI motorsports who's been in business for quite a while doesn't stand by there work. Customer put less than 800 miles on motor and it was properly broken in. Shop was caught in numerous lies about parts used in the build to.

This a good article not because the bad luck but something you need to address if you get a shop to build your motor that's not familiar with LT's but are with LS's.


This is probably the 4th or 5th time I've seen pics of LT builds with broken timing gears.

Well, there goes their reputation.


Honestly, mistakes like this shouldn't happen and if they do, the first moral thing to do is to own the mistake.


Not only, did they not do this, he paid for parts never even installed.

This happened to Lance Trip aswell different speed shop the didn't stand behind it either. LME said it may not break right away but eventually it does so if you got a build from a shop not familiar with LT stuff but good at LS you might want to ask or check up on it.

The problem happens when you use an aftermarket crank with a stock gm gear.

What a terrible sequence of events on so many levels.

Over the years my thought is a mechanical engineer should be a machinist first. That’s because mechanical engineers sometimes design products that are engineered so that machinist have a hard time making what was designed. This has nothing to do with tolerances as much as it does with practicality of manufacturing.

In the same fashion engine builders should also be machinist first. Basic assembly of an engine is more than putting it together. Good engine builders should have more knowledge of inspecting components for fit and finish versus assembling part A to part B. Of course experience in building engines is obvious.

Family and friends of mine have used many shops to build engines with this outcome. Substituting parts is not uncommon. One friend was doing a 1000+ build and the shop used a scat crank in place of a billet crank. Needless to say, it came apart.

Hopefully the shop owner and the customer can take care of the financials. However, that doesn’t appear like it will happen.

This is one of the biggest downfalls in the aftermarket performance industry. Shops charging big money and ****ing people over. The reason why it still goes on is because they often get away with it since many people are oblivious to this kind of stuff.

Doing due diligence on a builders past builds to me is a must. Having been a Federal Code Inspector of Nuclear power plants I consider myself by the book. Having said that, you just never know when someone will fall from your standard. In selecting my build soon to start, I have spent many hours in the shop with, mechanics and the tuner. Also seeing numerous Corvette ZO6'S and Camaro ZL1's in various build stgs has given me confidence in the builder. Can something still go wrong sure but, I know the builder stands behind his work and that's the most important thing.

And LME is probably one of the best engine building performance shops as well.
They know what they are talking About.

No shop should be touching engine building if they have no idea what they are doing with a certain platform. It’s like tossing parts in and saying “let’s see how this goes”.

I catch someone doing that on my car, I’m breaking their legs.

Which is why all the guys now at CSP have custom made steel leg guards when I walk in

I had no idea they were still in business. I remember them from the late 90s when I had my 96 Trans Am. I seem to remember some shadiness from them even back then.

I hate reading these stories. Reminds me of what happened back in the day with the shop my friend built engines for. They had a few MTI cars go through there. But the shop my friend worked for turned into a crooked outfit and my friend left because of it. Lots of customers got screwed big time. The guy who owned the shop moved on and did the same thing under another shop name in a different building. My friend hated the owner so badly by the end that even when my friend was dying, he told me to send a message to that guy to stay away from his ( my friends) funeral.
Unfortunately modifying cars brings a lot of crooked business with it. It’s unfortunate. It’s also why I learned to do almost all the work myself.
Feel bad for that guy who went to MTI but good for him for bringing it to light. I’m surprised they are still in business.
Mind you I even more surprised that Hennessy is still in business.

I’ll never understand why businesses that have people willing to spend tens of thousands won’t do anything within reason to get repeat customers when most people building their cars are going to do more in the future.

I also don’t know why people don’t do an insane amount of research on the people about to tear their car apart. I spoke to probably 15 shops, the moment I got even the slightest bad taste they were crossed off my list.

Because greed is short sighted. Plain and simple. Plus they don't have the skills, desire, resources, etc to do quality work for a long period of time. It's like a person who steal $200 from their job and gets fired when, instead of stealing, they could have just worked extra to make the $200. And even if they get fired they will still find another job and do it all over again. This company can scam someone and maybe a few people might avoid them. But they'll still get business from someone else. And eventually they'll just do it again to someone else. And so on. That is how scammers operate.
