Extended Warranty - Toronto/Canada comments
My 2018 Camaro 2SS is about to run out of the 3 year factory warranty so I've purchased an extended warranty. Just thought the forum might find my research on the topic of interest.... Again, this is based in the Toronto, Ontario, Canada area.....
1) in speaking to both the folks who sold the dealership warranties as well as some of the actual tech personnel who actually dealt with day to day warranty claims, the vibe I got was that the GM Extended warranties tended to be less hassle and somewhat more thorough. As an example, I was advised that if a part required a fluid refill, the GM Extended warranty covered that while aftermarket ones tended not to. A dealership can more readily share maintenance records with GM whereas an aftermarket provider would require proof which takes more time. GM might be more likely to be more flexible than an aftermarket provider since they don't want to alienate (if possible) a future/return GM buyer for a new vehicle. 2) When getting quotes on warranties, ensure the dealer is clear on if they are quoting a GM OR aftermarket. Some of my quotes it wasn't clear - surprisingly some GM dealers ONLY sold aftermarket warranties. 3) With GM anyway, the maximum extension (based upon when the car was first put "in service" (ie. when you bought the car) is 7 years or 160,000 km. So, in other words, a max of 4 years AFTER the factory 3 year warranty expires. The max 160,000 is based on the odometer reading of the car. So, for example, if when the factory warranty expires you have 60,000 km on the car, the extended warranty MAX is when the car shows 160,000 km. There are quite a few time/mileage options available. Obviously, the longer the time/mileage, the more the premium. 4) For the GM extended warranty I purchased, note you MUST buy it BEFORE the factory 3 yr/60,000 km expires. 5) I can strongly recommend the following individual if anyone in the Ontario area is interested in a great contact for an extended warranty.... Nicky Quinn Financial Services Manager Bill Spencer Chevrolet, 1090 Elgin St W, Cobourg, Ontario, Phone: 1-866-605-7385 nickytaylor05@gmail.com I did a fair amount of research including contacting a number of dealerships and in my opinion Nicky was outstanding ! She was extremely knowledgeable, patient (I must have spent about 90 minutes on my first call with her reviewing the details lol), prompt in getting emails to me, professional and in general a real pleasure to deal with. She was also willing to negotiate on price and provided a very fair discount to the normal rate. I tend to be very particular about my car (as we all are on this forum no doubt) and I don't give referrals lightly - but in my opinion this lady definitely warrants a big thumbs up !!! By the way, you don't have to buy the GM extended warranty from the same dealer you bought your car from (I bought mine from a different dealership). You don't even need to go to the dealership. Nicky and I completed everything over the phone and the internet (to exchange the contract which needed to be signed). 4) I also found out, at least with the GM warranty that you can NOT transfer it to a DEALER if you trade in the car. You CAN however transfer it to a personal buyer. Also, if you do trade in the car (or just don't want the warranty) GM will give you a pro-rated refund on the remainder of the unused warranty. Policy has details..... 5) I liked the GM warranty in that rather than listing what it DID cover - the policy instead lists what is NOT covered. Far better approach in my opinion. I know everyone has different opinions on extended warranties. On my purchases in general I tend NOT to get it. However, with all the fancy bells and whistles on our Camaros it can potentially be expensive to repair. Even though I've had excellent service from my car (no warranty issues at all over 3 years except the transmission fluid flush on the automatic) I still think it is a wise choice (at least in my opinion). Cheers ! |

Fellow Local Canadian here...
I have had 2 different experiences with Canadian warranties....both aftermarket and GMPP Hands down, the GM warranty is best....you can get different levels of warranty as well. When I bought my 2002 Camaro SS back in the day, I took out an additional years full GMPP warranty and it paid off big time. AC Compressor, labour, A/C fill etc. The one job alone was the cost of the one year extended warranty. I also had a 1995 Cutlass Supreme Convertible where I bought an aftermarket warranty, and it was all monkey business.....This was not covered etc.....Having to check with the warranty company etc etc etc.. Plus I could only take it back to the dealer I bought it from. GMPP is valid at any GM dealership. cheers, Jason
