Moving the spoiler camera

Afternoon Everyone,

I have a AC CF Big Wing on order and as you all know the 19s have the mirror camera in the spoiler. MY20 GM moved the camera to the Shark Fin on the roof. I was thinking of purchasing the shark fin camera and retrofit it with the wiring from the trunk. Has anyone done this, just wondering if there is sufficient wiring to pull it from the trunk up to roof. Thanks.

Gen 5 DIY has a kit to simply disconnect the wire in the truck and run a new, much shorter cable along the headliner directly to the mirror from the fin provided within the retrofit kit if I’m not mistaken. Maybe take a look at what they have, I attached the link below.

Thanks,
Way to expensive! Don't need most of what is in their kit.
Just looking to see if anyone has done the OEM move and if the current wiring harness I have is long enough to retrofit into the head liner.

It definitely is expensive if you only need a few pieces, I don’t see an issue as long as the cable to the truck lid is not part of the main body wiring loom and is separate. If it’s completely alone you should easily be able to run the cable up one of the B or C pillars to the headliner and fin after removing it from its original location. If it’s part of a wiring harness/loom it maybe a large pain if not worthless to attempt separation, but it’s definitely worth looking into!

Its doable. Im actually making one now, but if you want the GM one, you will need a Z Fakra Universal cable that you can run from the antenna to the deck lid. Also the GM shark camera is like $300 bucks. Here is the part number(in BLACK). You might need to have the dealership look up your color. Just get a 20' cable with FEMALE and MALE ends.

I have my front camera I made running all the way to the trunk and plugged in there.

Well that makes sense.....dah! Black is good, no need to color match it!
Can you provide anymore specifics on the connectors that I would need. I checked amazon and ebay and there are a bunch of different connectors for that cable.

Found it on RockAuto for $265, plus $8 shipping. Better than any GM shipping price!

Should just be Plug -N-Play. FIRECAPTN who comments on my modifications pages is doing it now. PM him. He lives in VA too, about 1 hr away.

Thank goodness THAT mod is over!
Bought the 2020 shark fin antenna / camera.... Originally I used the VIN from a black ZL1 and got a gloss black that I was going to leave black as I have black mirrors and was going black door handles, but the black antenna looked like a huge pimple so I gave 3 different dealers 3 different VINS of 3 different color cars and unfortunately they all seem to be the same p/n so had to paint the black one. Took 2 times (wrong white first time around).

Then there was someone's thought that it would be easier to get the "jumper" cable from the mirror to the antenna camera.....WRONG.....different connection entirely. So I routed the cable from where the original spoiler camera connection is beside the trunk latch to the roof. And you guessed it......I followed and TAPED just like the like the factory with that cloth like factory looking tape mind you, using the same path of that factory wiring harness.

The hardest part is doing all of the "connection" work in that narrow "slot" of an opening that you have to work in with the headliner!

Breaking those connections is a bear in that "slot" and space you have to work in.....being a contortionist helps.....but it was hard on this 65yo body that already has some "chassis" issues....

Used some 3M VHB squares to secure some of the wires to the roof structure (the rubberized sticky bastard patches GM used were pretty much toast after I finished with them). So.....a REAL PITA.....but it's done and works.....just wish there was just ONE more setting on the rearview to back it out 1X farther......in fact I was like OH NO......but I hooked the stock camera back up, and it's the same magnification.....friend's C8 I feel has that 1x more outward view, but I could be mistaken on that.

And Mr OCD that I am.....that black grommet thing on the camera.....yeah it came out to paint......caution.....another PITA....bastard clips on the inside of the housing!

The 10 ft is long enough, great! Didn't think I would need 20 ft.

Thanks for the info on the cable! Ordered it today, along with the camera/fin. Another winter project. What where you talking about on your last sentence.....My OCD?
Hopefully will get my wing from AC this year some time!
Waiting for APEX wheels to become available next month, so I can go 305/325. A little more rubber on the road.

Oh, nevermind, I got it. You took the camera out of the fin to paint the fin!

Finished my removal this morning. Had to take that cloth tape off the connectors, so I could see how they went together. Needed an extra set of hands, so the wife was laying in the trunk, while I pushed the release, and she pulled the plug. I couldn't get both hands up there. Waiting on the new fin and cable. There must have been a change to the trim pieces, because in the youtube video, there were two different trim pieces, they removed. Mine was all one piece. So far, not a difficult process, just no room to maneuver.
Yes, you wind up destroying that GM sticky pad they have holding the connectors to the roof.
I am thinking of getting that small black conduit and wrap the new cable to prevent it from rubbing on the metal.

Got it on order, along with the split wire loom conduit, black fabric tape.
Cable arrived today, fin tomorrow and the rest on Thursday. So I should have it all back together Friday. God willing and the creek don't rise!

Thanks for all the info!

Hopefully with have my Big Wing at the end of the month. Order the APEX, ARC-8, 19X11 and 19x12 setup today. Should have those by Nov/Dec. Be ready for another track season next spring.

All finished! Give it a 3/5 on the wrench scale. Only because it is so cramped in the back seat, very difficult to do much of anything easily. The youtube video that was put out by 5thgenDIY is extremely helpful and informative.
