Prospective Buyer Looking For Information

Hello Everyone,

I first of all wanted to thank the administrators for allowing me to create an account and inquire about some information on the sixth generation Camaro.

To begin, I'll give a little information on myself. Right now, I'm a current owner of a 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost. I've primarily been a Ford person. So my knowledge on GM is (I will admit) not as extensive compared to its Ford counterpart.

I'm thinking about jumping the fence and looking at the sixth generation Camaro. Main things I'm looking to know is how people's ownership experiences have been both short and long term. Also what I should be looking out in terms of issues (especially if buying used, which will most likely be my route of entry).

I'm looking at Camaro SS's specifically as I would like to move up to the V8 camp.

I appreciate any responses and looking forward to learning from everyone here. Take care.

Be careful if you're buying a pre-2019 automatic, the GM A8 suffers from a nasty shudder issue, there is a fix but it might be difficult to get it fixed with the dealerships.

The LT1 is a very robust and torquey engine, more similar to the Ecoboost than the Coyote which is a high revving and more complicated engine, reliable, parts are very cheap, literally everyone can and most have worked on LS/LT family of engines.

At the end of they day, they are the nicer cars from the cheap brands, infotainment is a big upgrade in GM from MySync and everyone (including reviewers) love it, there's cheap plastic in the inside like in the Mustang, they have very little systems so not much goes wrong with them, there's a recent lawsuit stating that all gen 5-6 Camaros have starters that aren't properly shielded from the engine heat so you might want to wait a bit to see what comes out of that.

The biggest difference however, is unlike the base GT, the SS comes with 275 Summer tires so you won't be spinning into crowds in car meets even with the gazillion torque :^)

bought my 2018 ss 1LE used in late 2018, 2k miles on it. clipped 20k miles last week. it's a weekender, no winters or rain. did full exhaust and tune (ethanol) @ 16k miles. the car gets its workouts during the summer months, 0 issues so far. it's a lot of fun.

Thank you for the replies so far!

To further narrow the criteria, I would be looking at a manual (as I would like to own one) coming from an automatic Mustang.

It would also be a daily driver for me (which unfortunately means taking it through the not so lovely Canadian winters). So if there is anyone with winter driving experience with , that would help. The Mustang has been quite stable in the winter (which I'd imagine the Camaro would be similar). But I just wanted to see if people have experienced otherwise.

I am going to be driving roughly about 25,000 KM (or roughly 15,000 Miles) every year.

Hopefully that helps out as well with responses. Thank you again.

I’ve been in the Gen 6 platform for 2yrs now. Never had a problem other than the dreaded torque converter issue.

Not sure what years you’re looking at, or even new, but my recommendation is ‘19+, as low a mileage as you can find with some factory left. I opted for an additional bumper to bumper when I got the ZL1. The 10spd is a very good tranny if you are looking at an auto.

Old trim levels were 1SS, 2SS, then ZL1 with 1LE options on any of those.

New offerings include the LT1. Base V8. There’s a thread on the differences.

Test drive one, maybe even do a rental for a couple days. It takes a little time getting used to the visibility, but it’s not as bad as people make it out to be. One option that I hate in other cars, but actually like in the camaro is rear & side collision alerts.

Good luck!

I'm mainly looking at 2016-2018's (mainly for preference on the styling). But maybe if the right deal came up with a 2019+, I would consider that.

And most likely a 2SS (I'm a fan of leather interior and a few more creature comforts). I could leave the sunroof though (I'm coming from a convertible) and I don't want the complications that come with it. But if the sunroof is part of the 2SS, I'll get over it.

It would be nice to find a 1LE (but so far, my search has been futile in finding one where I am located). But even one with some of the factory performance bits would be nice.

I've had my 2018 V6 Camaro for about two years now, and prior was a 2016 V6 Mustang for three years. Granted this isn't a T4 vs V8 comparison, but regardless they are same basic car across the board. The Camaro definitely has a more solid feel to it. Less rattles, smoother trans and motor (besides the A8 shudder which seems to be fixed now). Seating position is very different between the two. In the Mustang you sit much higher even though the two cars about the same overall height. The Camaro has a much tighter cockpit, which I personally like. As far as issues, I had no issues with either car, except for the shudder that I mentioned, which is fixed now. Overall the Camaro feels like a better built car in my opinion

I've been daily driving my 17 SS m6 now with 36k miles for the last three years, two of them through Syracuse winters. The Eagle F1's that came on the car were great when it was warm and dry, but had the back end come out a few times in the rain and were useless in the snow. I switched to General General G Max 05 and they have been the best DD tires I've ever owned. Same insane grip in the wet, dry and cold, and while not amazing in the snow the car went from useless to driveable. Just gotta remember to turn traction control off but keep stability control on and you can drive in several inches of snow!

Greetings and welcome!

My 2020 2SS Convertible M6 is my first sports / muscle car, my first convertible, my first vehicle with Magnetic Ride, and my first time having a V8 with a manual transmission (never bigger than a V6 with a manual in the past). I normally am on the road for work and drive a lot of rentals. I've been in a lot of Mustangs over the last couple of years (including one GT) and like the feel of the Camaro much better - everything just feels much "tighter" overall, and I never really cared too much for the exhaust sound of the Mustangs.

Some of the things I enjoy about the Camaro:

- The motor and transmission. They both are solid and you feel like you can really put the power down to the road smoothly.

- The ride and comfort. It's intended to be more solidly planted to the ground, but it rides nicely overall and I'm quite comfortable driving it over longer distances. I'm 6'1", and leg room is important - the Camaro has it.

- The handling. Magnetic Ride allows me to dial in the handling of the car, along with steering feel, to give me a very sure-footed feeling on the roads. Mostly, I keep it in Sport mode but will frequently flip it to Track mode for more aggressive turning needs. The car always feels like it has great grip, but Track mode lets it "corner on rails".

- The HUD. Always thought it was a bit of a gimmick, but I like having my speedo right in my line of sight at all times. The only downside is that it's almost impossible for me to see in the daytime because I wear polarized lens sunglasses and it blanks it out from my view.

Some of the things I do NOT enjoy about the Camaro:

- The trunk. It's pretty small on the coupes, it's almost non-existent on the convertibles. I drove a Mustang convertible on a couple of longer trips / vacations and was able to take a roller board and duffel bag (in the trunk) along with a small cooler in the back seat. There's simply no way to do that with the Camaro. As much as I would be happy to take it on trips, there's no place to put my clothes. While this is not generally a problem for me as mine was purchased to be a "weekend car" only, no space for luggage does reduce the amount of drive time it could get as I will not take it on vacations of any kind.

- The complete lack of in-cabin storage. There's pretty much nowhere to put a pair of sunglasses. There isn't even a good place to set your phone. The center console really has no storage in it and the glove box is "full" with the manual, the tow hook, and the gas fill converter thingy for using gas cans.

- The erratic behavior of the various electronics. Yesterday, my car decided that it was only going to output about 12.6V from the alternator instead of the typical almost 14V. It also didn't want to show the "now playing" information on the Infotainment screen. Restarting the car rectified both issues. I've also had the HUD reposition itself on its own, and the trip odometer changed into the "Do you want to reset?" screen on its own. Other weird things have happened here and there as well, and I personally believe it's because there is simply way too much technology in cars today.

Some of the things that people complain about that may or not be valid for you but are non-issues for me:

- The complete lack of usability of the rear seats. The coupes are bad enough, but the convertible is even worse. In addition to zero leg room behind me (my seat is all the way back), it's basically impossible for a full grown adult to sit in the back seat because the sides are "pushed in" to accommodate the mechanicals for the folding top.

- Poor rear visibility. Tons of complaints about this out there, but the reality is this: learn how to adjust and use your rear mirrors properly, and 99% of the "issue" is gone.

If I had the chance to do it all over again, the only thing I would change would be to get the NPP exhaust. Don't get me wrong... I wanted it right from the start, but there simply were no cars available that had the correct color, NPP, Mag Ride, and Manual in a 2SS trim. Anywhere. In the whole country. I love the exterior / interior color combo, the manual transmission, the convertible, Mag Ride, etc.

I have a 2017 2SS M6 that I bought new with just over 30K miles including half a dozen track days. It has been 100% trouble free (knocks on wood)

Only mods are Solier TB, & stainless steel brake lines.

My car has a snow and ice mode for driving in slippery conditions but being that I am in Atlanta, I have never used it

Great choice! I get bored with auto cars even fast ones. The V8 Camaros have on of the best manuals in all of cardom.

Save the manuals!

I've daily two Gen 6s. First was a 16 Blue Velvet 1ss with MRC,.NPP, and Sunroof. Bought brand new The car saw 500 miles a week on the interstate before I wrecked it. The current Yellow SS with NPP. Bought used 19k miles.. Currently at 39k
Both were autos.

The car is so fun to drive. Put the NPP in track mode and let it sing. However there are 4 main issues with the 16 to 18 year you need to consider.

1. TC shudder. This is only an issue with the A8 automatic. Many have complained. My two cars never had it but I did do trans flush early on. I would recommend doing so early on.
2. Rear diff groan. My first car did suffer from this badly. Another fluid change should hopefully clear this up too.
3. NPP rattle. Some of the early cars had the issue where the NPP would rattle on startup. My first did this in the winter. Dont think this is much of an issue with the later cars (18+)
4. Slow startup when warm. As mentioned previously in this thread there is a lawsuit regarding this currently. That affects most of the V8 camaros. My first car had this issue.

I would switch to all season tires immediately for daily use. The stock goodyears are ok but make a lot of noise. They are also terrible in rain. Michelin is obviously popular. I use Continentals due to price. Vote with your wallet.

I would make sure to test drive one to ensure you're comfortable with things like rear seat room trunk space and blind spots. Having owned two 1ss i don't believe blind spot monitoring is necessary (standard on 2ss) but others do. I also don't think MRC (magnetic ride control) is a necessary option. Npp and sunroof are the only must have mods for me. On NPP, know that it is more expensive to keep the valves and change the exhaust than it is without. The sound level is perfect for me but others will want it louder.

As for modding the car, there is no lack of parts. As someone else said it is a chevy and plenty of companies work on them. The LT1 engine is a torque producer, and doesn't have the high rpm shriek like the Mustang does. Mustang does have a forged bottom end though. So if want to add boost you'll need to.uograde both fueling and pistons and rods to run them safely, Whereas the Mustsng basically gets t o run Joe Blows turbo kit from eBay and make 700. There's a growing N/A movement (lead by GPI and Pray Performance) that are pushing the engine to the next level.

All in all I love my car. I personally wouldn't own another sports car. But I am biased.
