Unless the car is modded extensively or whatnot, I just go off the manufacturer recommendation. That's just me

Any brand is fine. The owner's manual states that any 5W30 synthetic blend or pure synthetic oil that meets dexos1 specification will be fine.

You can run 5-30 Dexos and it will be fine. You can also run the newer Mobil 1 0-40 ESP dexos if you want.

Since he has a 1LT RS, the 0W-40 would not be appropriate as that is for the V8's only. I4 and V6 should stick with 5W-30.

This is very informative....yes very informative...indeed. I'll add it to my Camaro 3 leaf binder for future reference.

The 1LE LS/LT(I4/V6) models are supposed to use 0W-40 or 5W-40 Dexos2 when driven on the track, per the performance supplement. Those engines are are identical to their non 1LE counterparts so I imagine you are safe using that oil in high performance situations (and probably daily driven as well as many SS track seem to).

OP, if you are under the powertrain warranty then use the oil specified in the manual which for a 2017 LT RS is 5W-30 Dexos1. I think later years switched to 0W-40 Dexos2, though maybe just in the V8s.
