Brake fluid color indication of tracked?

Looking under the hood today and noticed the brake fluid is pretty dark for only 5500 miles. I bought the car used at around 3200 and I have never tracked it. Would the dark color indicate the previous owner tracked it? One pic with flash one without. Thanks.

Not necessarily. Get a brake fluid tester. I use this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005HVG4GQ..._tnt8EbA51RB2Z

Any brake fluid which looks like that deserves to be flushed immediately

Can't say for sure, but my guess is that stuff got very hot, very likely from some hard tracking... I've seen 8 year old, 60,000 mile fluid look way better...

Change it ASAP...

Definitely looks like it has been heated up. I wouldn’t worry over the car having been tracked. That doesn’t mean it has been abused. These cars are designed for it.

I’ve been tracking cars since 1989 and I’ve never seen fluid in the reservoir discolor like that. Was that in the 2019 ZL1? That looks like 5 year old fluid to me.

Some fluids grow darker faster than others. Most of the time the fluid will be darkest in the lines near the calipers as it sees the most heat. This typically looks dirty and aged so best be safe to just change it anyway.

oh...before anyone flushes that disgusting fluid out of the system, please use a baster or equivalent to suck out the reservoir contents. Add fresh fluid then proceed.

This car driven hard on track cooks the fluid fast.

I'll use a vacuum brake bleeder. Suck out the reservoir 1st, then work on the bleeder screws.

So the order of suckage is furthest away from reservoir to closest like most vehicles? Anyone know the size of the bleeder screws?

Any tips for this car from the pros?

Thanks.

To be honest my Motul DOT4 fluid on both the SS 1LE I had and my current ZLE usually look like that and I don't have any braking issues on track with stock pads. I flush the fluid twice a year or so.

When I did my own flushes usually the color was orange coming out of the calipers and after a couple seconds it turned the normal clearish yellow. The reservoir was similarly orange. But I think you also will see that the color of the reservoir is also darker because you are looking through a fairly deep section which will look darker than if it came through a narrow clear tube.

I'd flush it if it's unknown and it bothers you, but I bet you will see it discolor pretty fast once again.

Maybe the color gets darker faster because of clutch usage?
