Possible Apple CarPlay solution.

I like apple car play but hate plugging my phone in all the time. I had a thought yesterday that seems to be an inexpensive fix for this but not sure how well it would work so I thought I’d see if anyone on here has already tried it or has an old iPhone to give it a try.

I have an iPhone XR. It’s a work phone so I don’t load music to it. In my car I have an iPod with all my music that I typically keep plugged in. Unfortunately, iPods don’t have apple CarPlay. So, I am wondering if can pick up a used unlocked iPhone 6s ($120 on Amazon), which I would Load my music to and leave plugged into the car as I do my iPod. I wouldn’t get cell service for it but have it connect to my iPhone XR Hotspot when I start the car so apple play could work. I wonder if it would auto connect to the hotspot.

Thoughts?

You can play both recorded and streaming music over Bluetooth

AFAIK, If you want to display Waze on your screen then you do need to plug in your phone

Yes, many people have done that here. Give it a search.

Might be a dumb question, but, would a Bluetooth adapter plugged into the usb and connected to an iPhone work? I doubt it will, but it seems someone could make a Bluetooth device that Does something like that. If any of you invent, patent, and sell a device like that...I get some royalties from the sales! Lol

I did give it a search before posting but the details are sketchy as far as if the iPhone in the console would auto login to the hotspot when it starts or will you have to cycle the hotspot off and on again on the iPhone XR for it to be discoverable? Also if the GSP will work thought the iPhone XR hotspot or if maps, wake, etc would be inoperative. Or if there would be any other glitches?

There is a long current thread in the Stereo subforum regarding a bluetooth dongle that will allow for wireless CarPlay.

Won’t your phone die when it gets hot out from just sitting in your car? Last year I was waxing my car with the windows open listening to music and my phone died , a message came up about being overheated. After it cooled off it was fine

A little pricey. I think I’ll stick to plugging it in.

Update: Well, it worked like a champ!!

So I got my daughters old iPhone 6s (iPhone 5 and newer have car play) with a cracked screen and discontinued service for this mod. I charged it up and wiped the phone and loaded all my music from iTunes and a few apps like Waze, Maps, Amazon Music, and Escort. My car’s hotspot subscription is turned off (I never activated the service) so I will use my iPhone XR for mobile data.
In my iPhone XR ‘s Settings I activated the hotspot. In the car’s settings I added my iPhone XR as a WiFi network and logged in. I added this as a favorite network for the Camaro by clicking the favorite “star”. Then in the iPhone 6s’ settings I logged the phone into the Camaro’s hotspot as a WiFi network and clicked auto-connect. I also connected the iPhone 6s to my Escort 360 Maxx via Bluetooth. Then plug the iPhone 6s into the center console and chucked the phone in there. That’s it.

When I get into the car, I only push the start button the rest happens without any input from me... the Camaro does an auto login to my iPhone XR hotspot, the iPhone 6s does an auto login to the Camaro WiFi, and Apple CarPlay comes up on the screen and Waze is visible on the infotainment 3 screen and the music loaded on the phone begins to play (right where it left off). The iPhone 6s connectS to the Escort 360 Maxx via Bluetooth. My iPhone XR still connects to the car via Bluetooth for phone, address book, and Siri as it always has. No glitches so far!
