Desire education on headers.

Hey everyone I’m somewhat of a novice when it comes to modifying a car so I wanted to get some information on headers and how they work. Specifically also about the sizing such as 2” or 3” and what is best. Looking to get some for my car and wanted to learn about them first. Also if anyone could tell me their power gains. Thanks.

1 7/8" vs 2" primaries and brand are your choices for a V8 Camaro

Headers help to smooth out air flow as it exits the engine. The faster the air is released the more power that is made, so to speak.

In regards to sizing whether it’s 1 7/8ths or 2” is the size of the piping that connects from the headers to the engine. These are called the primaries. They feed into a collector that is 3” in diameter most of the time.

1 7/8 will create good HP with good torque with more room to fit. These are good if you a doing more simple bolt ons and have no desire to go further than 650-700 wheel HP.

2” makes good power but will make less torque due to decrease in back pressure on a simple bolt on application. Now for bigger applications such as going for 800+, this will make the most power and torque.

Personally I would do the 2” bc you never know if you are going to go big.

At any rate, whatever path you take you will need to do a custom tune. The exhaust pressure will change and so will the air fuel ratio. This will mean that you will lose warranty which to me means nothing. These cars are stout. You can make over 700 very easily without sweating the engine.

The 3" you mention is the pipes after the headers. As others mentioned 1-7/8" or 2" for headers.

With your 1LE I would go 1-7/8 and maintain a little more clearance. As far as quality you pay for what you get. ARH and Kooks are the top two.

This would also require tuning and you should gain 50-60 hp easy. Also, take a look at a good catback exhaust like Corsa or AWE to go with it.
