GM changed recommended fluids in 2019+
I was wondering if anyone knew why the reason behind the change in recommended fluids for the LT1 equipped Camaros. I thought the engines were supposed to be complete identical, but the more I keep reading and preparing for my new car, I keep finding these differences.
I was also reading today on these forums that the sound tubes to the firewall seem to be gone from recent production V8 Camaros. Were there minor changes that they aren't telling us about? Any ideas? |

Probably due to oil consumption/DI stuff. I don't know that it's fair to say "issues" but that might be the simple way to say it.
The new stuff is Dexos 2. I believe the weights are thinner, so it also has to do with efficiency and less drag through the engine. https://mobiloil.com/~/media/amer/us...ne%20pager.pdf

Also, the Mobil1 0W40 oil wasn't available in 2015 when they launched the car. It seems to be a better oil, why not upgrade the recommendation once it's released.

Just understand - environmental demands is what drives the research in motor oils.
One way to think about it, that with each new "generation" of oils that comes along, (API SJ to SL, SL to SM, etc....) you end up with a product that is as almost as good as the previous generation as far as lubrication goes, but contains less "dirty" ingredients (things like Zinc and Sulfur). The best oils you can buy over the counter are actually the older ones that are SJ level. It is just that if you run SJ oils in a stock modern car, you could see issues with clogging the cats as the older ingredients tend to want to stick to the cats when hot. A newer oil or newer API certification doesn't mean it is better at lubricating |

(Also, one of the advertised features of the new 0W40 is that one can run the same oil on the street and for light track duty, so I'm not 100% sure changes are solely related to emissions, but my knowledge of motor oils is very limited.)
