Oil low light - how much oil?

Was a bit surprised an concerned to see the oil low light come on last week. The oil life indicator was at 45% and i had planned on changing it in the spring. I have about 5k on the oil. I didnt want to bring it to the dealer now for an owed free oil change with the oil light on so I immediately went online and purchased some mobil 1 0-40 and received it yesterday.

Does anyone have similar experience and know how low the oil is when the light alert is triggered? i ended up putting in 3 quarts of oil 1 Q at a time letting the car run for 5 mins then shutting it off and checking the level after 10 mins of sitting. after checking the dipstick with each quart i still could not get a reading on the dipstick. after 3 quarts I felt like that was a lot of oil so i stopped. I couldnt believe i was running the car that low on oil. ugh

I had read on the forum that our Z's may burn some oil but this seems like a lot and honestly i had not been checking periodically. I will do this regularly moving forward. I will probably take to dealer now for free oil change and save the rest of the oil for later top offs.

just checking if this is normal to burn this much over about 5k miles? 2 track days and some 4-5 heavy canyon runs during those miles.

thanks

Ive never tracked mine, but from what I've read it seems like 5k miles with 2 track days and 4-5 spirited canyon runs sounds like way more than what should be done before getting an oil change. I change at 5k miles or less without the track days or canyon runs.

I don't know that waiting 10min for the oil level to stabilize is right. I seem to recall that it can take an hour for the oil level to stabilize.

Have you checked the oil level again after letting it sit over night to make sure that it isn't over filled?

And, though I have not yet tracked mine. Usually when my oil light comes on, it takes about a quart and a half to fill it up.

You definitely are overdue on the oil change itself. Supposed to be changed after track usage.

Check the oil again first thing in the morning. You’ll get a more accurate reading of the level that way.

Checked the oil just now. about 40% on the dipstick so better after sitting overnight. at least its not still reading below the dipstick or overfilled. getting it changed next week so good to go.

Mine has only come on once, and it was within about 200 miles of its regular mileage change point (I think the % was about 10%).

I now have 20K miles and 4 oil changes and it only happened that one time.

your two track days probably accounted for a quart (ish) of your usage. Hard to say about the other two quarts if you never checked the level. It is possibly in question the level was never at the correct full level. After the change, I would keep a closer look at your dipstick.

This.

If anyone is planning on tracking their car I would take a few quarts of oil to the track with you. Even if you do not need it through out the day at least you have it on hand if needed.

If I do a full track day I will burn about a quart. Regular street driving I see no measurable oil consumption and I typically drive the car somewhat hard on the street.
