Power modded ZL1s on the road course

I will VERY likely keep the ZLE stock because I feel 650hp on a road course is plenty, but I'm curious, anyone in the 750hp to 850hp range road race your cars? Any overheating problems? How about controllability?

In a road course environment, I would suggest keeping boost at near stock levels because adding more boost to the stock setup produces much more heat. This in turn causes the engine oil temperature to rise significantly. Drag racers don't need to worry but 25 min road course sessions cause much more heat soak. A setup like Janetty's road course E-85 tune is a good one for extra hp and heat mitigation. He keeps the supercharger pulley stock and increases the hp with headers, E-85, tune, & throttle body.

Interesting. Thanks.

I see those super fast VIR times... awesome.

What Stephen12ZL1 wrote about keeping boost near-stock levels is spot on. The reason I say that is because the owner of the detail shop I use modded his '18 ZL1 1LE (headers, x-pipe, no cats, upper/lower pullies, Roto-Fab intake, ported TB, ported SC snout, catch can, plugs/wires). After the mods, his car put down 85 more rwhp and 135 lb/ft more torque. Unfortunately, the first time at the track, his ZL1 1LE didn't make it two laps before going into lip mode. Some cooling mods were added before the second trip to the track but limp mode still occurred before completing two laps. The owner got frustrated and sold the car.

The lesson to be learned from all this is that mods that work well to increase 1/4 mile performance don't necessarily improve performance for a 25 min track session.

You can make more power without adding more boost and most likely not have any issues. The problem becomes the power per dollar isn’t very good as if you were to just throw more boost at it.

I’m real interested to see how the magneson 2650 will do at near stock boost levels on the road course. By all accounts it’s internal cooling bricks are pretty good and it doesn’t seem that the lt5 is having heat issues.

I think to get away with adding a decent amount of power you would need to throw a larger blower on it and add some breathing mods to keep the air flowing through it at low boost levels. But then your talking 8 grand or more for maybe 100 hp.

I can attest to the "lesson learned". I modded a C7 Base with a SC, Dewitts Radiator, Oil Cooler, Headers and it was making 677 at the wheels, but couldn't keep it on the track more than about 10 mins, before it went into limp mode. Very frustrating which lead to me selling it and getting a ZL-1.

Same reason I stayed away from a C7Z!

What is your goal? Just for fun or trying to improve lap times?

If the latter, I think put that money into a nice set of light forged wheels like Forgelines GA1Rs. And maybe some better brake lines etc. Stuff like that to get you into and out of the corners faster. I think those types of investments would help with better lap times than more power.

Not as fun or glamorous though I know.

Yeah once I started going to the track I realized my car has plenty of power.. It's the driver that needs fixed!

Invest in track time not mods. Many SS 1LE’s out there faster than ZL1’s.

Track Time
Coaching
Tires
Brakes
Fluids
Track Insurance
Safety (Cage, Harnesses, Great Helmet, HANs, Seats)

IF you still have budget left after that (you're doing something right) then you might want to consider some AP Racing brakes as your upgrade. The car has plenty of GO, it does however, run out of STOP if pushed really really hard.
