Wheels...Paint or Powder Coat?
I would like to get some new wheels but the ones I like (1LE) are quite expensive and out of my price range. So, I was wondering if painting or powder coating my stock 1SS wheels would be a better option and more affordable. So...paint or powder coat? And if anyone has had that done could you let me know the approximate cost to have them done.

Powder coat… Paint on wheels does not last. Prepare to pay about $125 per wheel

I had a set repaired (scratches, few dings, not curb rashed), stripped, powder coated, and ceramic coated.
$725 for the whole thing, including taking off, unmounting, remounting and balancing and reinstall. |

Powder coat. No question. Painted wheels are straight garbage.

Powder coat is WAY more durable. I would only do a painted wheel if it is not a daily driver and is garaged.

I vote for powdercoat. Still, properly prepped and painted wheels are just fine, and far more durable than people think. ..and powder, like paint, is only as good as the prep. I'd take properly painted wheels over a quickly done powder job any day. I painted my Trailblazer wheels with the duplicolor wheel paint system. Removed the wheels, clean, sand, prep, prime, paint and satin clear. Lasted for many years with zero blemishes. This was on my DD. Regular washing and wheel cleaner use. -and I'm no pro, but I'm not lazy. either I mean, ya paint your CAR, right? When done right, either will last a LONG time. When done wrong, both will fail. Still, if given the choice....I'd vote for powder. Last edited by Abubaca; 11-27-2019 at 05:18 PM. |

Thank you everyone for your input. From the sounds of it powder coating will be the better choice. Does powder coat come in a good variety of colors? I have a white car. I like the look of black rims but it seems there are a lot of white Camaro with black wheels. They look really good but I’m wondering if a different color such as gun metal would look nice. Opinions?

caSS, don’t know if you would be interested but I saw a set of 2019 SS wheels that are powder coated for $1,195.00 with free shipping on eBay. Item #113713577618 powder coated gloss black. The company is located in Texas.

They look nice! Is that a good deal? I haven't really priced wheels like that so I'm not sure if its a good price or not. I kind of like the color. Would probably look good on a white car. Do you think I would be able to sell my stock silver ones?

You could keep your silver stock SS wheels when you sell or trade your Camaro to put back on the car. If you get those wheels you could put your tires and TPMS sensors and just store your stock wheels in the garage.

Yes that is a pretty good deal because shipping wheels usually costs around $100.00 thru UPS. I did notice that the company has 100% eBay rating too.
