Why rotate tires?
We all know to rotate tires on most cars to even out treadwear. But on my 2SS with the staggered set-up, nondirectional tires, is there really a need to rotate them side to side? I've done it once so far, but I'm thinking why? Is there expected to be a difference in treadwear from one side to the other?

I flip the tires on the front, If that makes since. The tires are removed from the wheels and flipped sides on the same wheel and put right back on. I even had them rebalanced this time as the first time I did not and they vibrated like crazy from 90-150mph on every lap around AutoClub Speedway. I run Hoosier R7's but this is a track only car. It helps them to last a little longer on the inside part of the tread when the track camber on the ZL1/1LE. I am not sure about a SS street car though? unless your really wearing out the inner parts of the tires?

You cant and should not do this with the tires on the SS or higher performance models. The tires have a "Outside" designation on the sidewall, that side should always be on the outside of the tire at all times. You can and should rotate side to side every 5k miles. It will help with cupping on the outside shoulder blocks of the tread, it keeps those block from cupping or pulling the leading edge of the tread block up which will cause a vibration. I rotate my tires side to side every 5k miles, I use that rotation to clean the inside of the wheels and also to wipe off the brake calipers as well.

So if you read the Hoosier R7 specs you can do it after you run the tire in the correct direction. Which again is the tire I use. There are many dudes that rotate the ZL1 3R's that way but I dont use them anymore. Not every tire is made the same. These tires only last about 600 miles if you want to average them out. 18-24 track sessions or heat cycles whatever maxes out first. Again, just tossing out there, there are some tires you can move around and are actually suggest by Hoosier for track setup camber.
Was just a thought, but always do some research per the manufacturer. I would not use the Chevy manual once you buy non stock tires on how to manage your tire wear and air pressures. Every manufacturer has wegiht settings, pressure etc ... Chevy doesnt address all kinda of tires. Just a thought ........ |

Side to side rotation helps even out wear some still. Most roads are crowned and statistically, we make more right turns than left.
If you typically eat up tires very fast due to your driving, then maybe it doesn't make enough difference to matter. |

On a staggered setup your just wasting time and money flipping tires around in this manner.

It costs me nothing to unbolt a wheel/tire and move it one side to the other. Plus it does help and it evens out the wear across the whole tire and keeps the cupping from happening. huge reason why most tire manufactures got away from symetrical and or directional tires, the lack of being able to rotate them killed the mileage and caused the outside tread blocks to cup. With the advent of asymmetrical tires and now being able to rotate the tire side to side with no performance loss helps with tire life. I have almost 14k miles on my MP4S tires, over 10k of those miles all while being supercharged and putting down 650rwhp. The rears are still 3/32nds off of the wear bars so I should easily get another 7.5k to 10k miles out of these tires.

I thought radial tires were supposed to rotate in the same direction, thus you should not rotate tires that are different sizes front to rear. Is this not true anymore?

He's talkign about swapping the front tires.
I do the same for the OEM Goodyear Supercar3. Left front gets chewed up on track days fairly easily. Swap it for the right front and ur good!

You should have your alignment checked a couple times a year, that will help to keep even tire wear. Really important on the staggered setups since you can't properly rotate the tires. Most reputable shops will check it for free and give you a read out then let you make your decision about aligning it.

I can definitely see where it would be important if you track your car. I don't, so that's why I wonder.

I didn't rotate at all for 23k miles on the OEM tires. Got an alignment done after the new tires. Now it's been almost another 20k miles, still no rotating.

Check the TPS all the time. Don't wait for the warning. Cold TP is 35 so when you air up, put in at least 36. Otherwise, it's never really running correct TP because they lose pressure so quickly. Especially under hard driving. I run nitro in the tires and don't worry about it. These tires aren't cheap!
