outside temperature
the reading for my outside temperature seems to be off by 6-7 degrees. I assume the ambient temperature sensor is the problem. I am not sure where it is located. I am guessing between the front bumper and the radiator. so, do I need to remove the front bumper/grill to change it out?

I know mine takes a long time to catch up to ambient...my garage is climate control & leave at 75 when it's 100 outside, you think it would climb fast?? It takes a good while if on the go. If I stop to fill up right after leaving the house & park out in the sun the temp sensor seems to catch up faster vs scooting down the road??
No idea where it's located to help ya, just make sure you give her time to get there before jumping in. Just a cautious FYI in case you gotta slow one. I will say mine works like it should if running errands...it's only the initial ambient catch up that takes the time. |

temp sensor
thanks. sometime it works and sometimes it is way off. I just didn't know how much work is involved to replace it.

It's all going to depend on where it's sitting as to the temp shown. If the car is heat soaked or sitting in the sun, of course it's going to read higher. Once they ambient air flow over the sensor stabilizes the area, you'll get a true reading.

Most cars use a thermistor instead of a thermometer which from what I understand (and a very limited knowledge admittedly) is much less accurate, especially as the placement makes it susceptible to excess heat from the road.

There should be a way to adjust it, maybe with a scan tool.

The outside air temperature sensor does some funky stuff to avoid reading heat soak according to the repair manual. You might have to drive up to 8 minutes at >19mph for it to start reading the current value.

If the temp sensor is wet (for example after washing the car or in the morning after a heavy dew), it will show a lower temperature due to evaporation. After a few miles of driving, the temperature will be more accurate.

These are typically 10k thermistors in some kind of weather resistant housing. The last time I replaced one I think I found the exact thing (housing and all) on digi-key and just reused the connector from the old one. Soldered and heat shrinked the connections. Cost me like $2 instead of $20.
BTW, you do want these things reading correctly as the ambient temp data from this sensor is often used for the air/fuel calculation by the ECM. I'd have to dig through the service manual to make sure, but this has been the case in other cars I owned. EDIT: Nope. This car does not use ambient data for the ECM from what I can find. It has a multifunction sensor which reports intake air temp, pressure, mass, and humidity. The ambient is used for accessories like HVAC, instrument cluster, and convertible top. If only the engineers could devise some way of allowing a driver or passenger to manually check the outside temperature... some means of extending a hand and arm outside of the cabin while the car is either at rest or in motion... some device that could open some part of the vehicle to the outside environment.
Roll your window down. It's one of three things: Too hot, too cold, or just right. Goldilocks can tell you all about it. Yeah, I am old AND grouchy. |

my AAT is constantly 10* over the actual outside temp.
My radio shows actual outside temp (matches with my phone) while my AAT in my logs show this 10* delta
