Windshield defrost vent removal?
I have a terrible rattle in the upper vent on my dash, but I can't seem to get any pry tools into the edges the vent is on so tight.
Anybody have any links, suggestions, so I can figure out how to get that open? |

If you think it’s the vent itself rattling against the hole, before you try to pry it out and break off a tab or two, go to a hobby shop and get some very thin foam rubber strips or weatherstripping. People who build models airplanes use this stuff, and it’s much thinner and higher quality than home weatherstripping. Use a thin screwdriver, kitchen knife or trim tool to stuff about a half-inch-long piece of weatherstripping between the vent and the edge of the hole at one spot, and then drive the car and see if the noise is gone. If it’s not, place another piece about 90 degrees from the first one and go for another test drive. If this doesn’t work, continue the same process until you’ve hit all four 90-degree spots.
If you still have a rattle, curse your car and go buy a set of thin plastic trim removal tools from Harbor Freight or Griot’s Garage (https://www.griotsgarage.com/product...ks&from=Search) to gently pry out the vent. Using a screwdriver or other metal tool will probably damage the dash, because the vinyl material is ridiculously thin on its backing material. Then you can pop out the vent and feel around inside the hole - and hopefully find a wire, hose or plastic part that’s loose. P.S. you did look down into the vent from outside the car to make sure there were no screws holding the vent grill, right? |

Yeah it is definitely something inside the vent, I tested the cover itself already and the noise is still there.
I did look into the vent, and although it is hard to see, I didnt see any screws holding it in. I'll try to find some thinner pry tools and give it a go again. |

Could you get a video of this rattle? I think I have the same exact issue. Does the rattle appear under mid-aggressive acceleration?

I will try later today to get a video of it. The rattle is almost all the time, even when just cruising at speed. I'm pretty sure a fan blade or a screw is just loose in there.
