Homemade taillights tint cover

Wanted to try the taillights tint cover that some vendors here are offering and kinda told myself... It's a simple vinyl piece that is cut to shape... Why not doing it myself... For a fraction of the price?

With the use of Catia V5 and my father's vinyl cutter, I will attempt to make mine.

I've already made the template in my 3D software and gonna test it out on the car.

We'll see how well it fits!

The template I made ended up being completely off haha. But I worked on the scale a little and ended up with a perfect match.

Gonna tweak it up a little and transfer it to a MDF support to be able to cut my pieces... And do even more than 1 set...!

Depending on the weather around here I hope to get something next weekend.

Slowly but surely getting there. I have worked on my template. Made a first mdf one, tested it on the car, made some corrections to it and then redid another one. It's getting close. I have tested it with the actual tinted vinyl and minus some few adjustments (around 0.030") at some places, it is practically perfect. I applied it pretty quickly and made a barely unnoticeable wrinkle, but since I plan on redoing it with my corrected template, I didn't bother fixing it.

Here are some pictures of it. The first taillight picture is without the film, the second one is with the film. Then the comparison (passenger side without film).

Just a recommendation on my part from doing something similar previously....

Use tape inside the light and put multiple layers to make it thick...cut the template out of the tape then transfer to a solid item such as cardboard

That's exactly what I have done in the end. I have used the template made out of tape to work on my mdf template to better trace on the tint vinyl.

Still I want to transfer it to cad to see if it could cut way faster on the vinyl plotter.

But right now my template is completed and I have successfully installed both of my pieces. And I still have material left over!! Last picture is still with the driver side with the tint on and the passenger side without it (redid the driver side to make it ever more perfect).
