Onstar thinking about buying it.

Does anyone pay for Onstar's services? I was thinking about getting the remote access safety and security for piece of mind incase someone attempts to steal the car.

Anyone else pay for Onstar?

I don’t know how to copy a link, but there are a few topics about it in the general forum asking similar questions. I just did a search and found a couple about midway down.

If someone steals my car, I don’t want it back.

That’s what insurance is for.
OnStar has nothing I want or need.

Since you have a 19 you have the newer navigation system. The traffic information is now through Onstar and not sat radio. So if you want predictive nav and traffic info you would need the connected nav plan at 10$ a month plus the data plan unless you have a hotspot.

Since you have a manual the only thing you can use is lock and unlock and vehicle locator. You also can see how much gas and tire pressure. You can also adjust all your settings online in your myChevrolet account page with the 19 with the updated infotainment system.

I have a 19 Silverado with the newer system and it’s ok but all said it’s like 60$ a mo th or something to have it all. 25$ for unlimited data and 36$ For the Onstar plan plus 10$ for connected nav.

Chevy has become the stingiest company with the free trials out of all us brands. You get 5 years travel link with ford and fca and one year or 6 months for audio . Chevy is 30 days in 2019 and one year on 18s. And the Onstar trial is one month and if you call and put a card on file you get an extra 2 months.

I don’t see myself keeping any of it because the only real use for me is remote start. The rest I use rarely if at all, I have 3 chevys so if i were to pay for all 3 it would be insane.

Onstar is way too expensive for what you get. If you want to know where your car is if it is taken hard wire an old iPhone under the dash and use find my phone. You can get a cell plan for next to nothing these days. That would be the only cost.

So I guess you got your answers. Basic Onstar is free (5 yrs) but doesn't cover being stolen. Total waste of money for what you get.

I just signed up for 6 months @ $9.99 a month for the protection plan which is normally $19.99. I called Onstar by phone.

Cost wise it’s a rip off. I can lock/unlock, locate my Raptor by satellite for free.

Navigation.. plug in your phone ( Car Pllay / Android auto and have up todate traffic data.

I use it every day w Android Auto and google Maps app. See my route and any alternate routes and they are faster or slower. Sometimes slower is Ok if it means less tolls. 3-5 minutes slower, but save $1+ in tolls.. decisions.

I dont see reason to pay for same thing twice.

No, I am using the vehicle locator. It's at the dealership now. I want to keep track of it and cancel when the six months are up. I figure if they will offer half off for protection, they might do the same for you for what you want.

Hi all,

It's a waste of money and a big intrusion into your life, IMO. The system records your travel data and provides all your info to associated vendors. There have been a lot of write-ups about this system, and it seems to be way too involved in my activities. If I wanted GM/OS/Anyone to know where I was frequently going, shopping, whatever...I would let them know directly. I don't was to do so through the OS system.

I understand that even when you discontinue the service, it will still track your actions, such as locations, driving habits, etc. If that is the case, then I especially do not want the system active. I shut my OS service off days after leaving the dealership, and have no regrets. I already have enough intrusion into my life with my cell phone service via Verizon and Google/Android. I'm still concerned that even though I no longer have the service, the OS system might still track my movements and actions.

I don't feel paranoid, and am not driving like an ass on the streets, but I guess I'm just fed up with the fact these services do whatever they want with our privacy... mostly unchecked.

Just my opinion...

JJ
