Help me I live in California!!!

On the fence on whether or not I want to buy a completely new exhaust system so I thought I'd see what everyone thinks. The new law is set at 95db which my car will NOT pass as of this moment. I've got kooks lt headers going into MBRP race exhaust, so not cats. I did install some small cherry bomb mufflers toward the back to quiet it down since the straight pipes were insane. Question is, what are my options to get this thing where it needs to be if that's the road I decide to go down? Removing the headers is def not an option but I might toy with the idea of a different exhaust that has cats and mufflers. I would just want to make sure that whatever I buy will meet the requirements. I'd also like to stay close to the low, rumble that my current setup provides.

I think you want to read up or YouTube university the issue as there so many videos up.

If you get popped for the exhaust you then get hit with literally everything aftermarket as they’ll just give you the pipes and the car has to go 100% back to stock. State Ref’d or you won’t be able to register the car.

So where exactly are they measuring this 95db from? Are they measuring the exhaust at idle, revving, driveby at cruising speeds?

If it's based on revving from say 6ft away, a lot of cars will go OVER that in stock form.

What I've read is 2500 rpm but this could be wrong. If you get ref'd your pretty much ****ed if you have LT's no cats and so on. Really has me rethinking my entire build. I'm currently running MBRP cat back but still have my stock NPP in the garage. SS with the amount of money and time you've put into your car, I would find some good quiet mufflers and stay off the radar.

My friend just got popped in his STI. They're taking this pretty seriously right now it seems.

The law has been 95dbA for a long time now. The rule change is just to make it from a correctable infraction to a $1000 fine. CA uses SAE J1169 as a test standard. I am going to guess that small displacement vehicles will get hit harder than large displacement vehicles will. Police officers, like many other people, confuse frequency with decibels. My old Fox body stang was 98dbA and my RX7 was 94 dbA but everyone would say my RX7 was louder.

The rules have been there no doubt

Now they have a task force out targeting anyone with exhaust to test and hit.
Along with the $1,000 hit comes the state ref visit where the car has to be verified stock so no matter what it’s going to be rough.

Everyone can thank the CA swing shutdown events

I'm not sure what to say. Mods would probably delete everything I've thought of. So... Guess best to manage your noise and hope this is more risk for a rice fart pipe?

As said this law has been there for years, before it was a no-fine fix it ticket. Now it is a fineable offense and hefty at that with it being $1000.

In stock form the Camaro SS will probably be close, the NPP will be the only saving grace. If you get tested lock it in "Stealth" mode before the test. If you dont fail the test then the ticket will have to be dismissed.
