Nitrous and the LT1
School me on a good, reliable, won’t blow my car up nitrous set up for my car.
I have a GPI SS4 cam... I can get the specs when I get home, heads, e85, longtubes headers, intake. I will be getting an intake manifold soon. The car currently puts down 533hp/472tq I’m wanting to do a small 50-100 shot of nitrous. Should I do it? |

Did you have to flycut the pistons to fit that cam?

Instead of upgrading your pistons, you could always just do it and wait until you lose a piston and then use it as an excuse to build the motor. It’s actually a somewhat logical plan since it’s not much cheaper to do it before hand. But you should be prepared for it you add nitrous in my opinion. |

I have a friend I race with at the drags, he installed a 90 dry shot on his LS2 Corvette about 5 years ago & it is his DD. It is worth about .60 tenths on his car. Last race of the season for us in great air he made a non nitrous pass of 12.21 & turned on the nitrous & went an 11.50 back to back.

I will put my 2 cents in.
I started my Nitrous set up last Spring, I still have not dailed it in yet and mainly because I don’t have a warm and fuzzy feeling about my Tuners in my area. I went with the machined ring around the Holley High Rise for a even spray in each cylinder. I went with a stand alone fuel system, auto opener which I strongly recommend, auto heater blanket to turn off and on. Added safety shut off fuses for any spike. I went with all the best stuff on the market at the time and a 15 pound tank which I strongly recommend as well. Had to play with spark plugs a lot, you don’t want to melt your engine. I have done numerous 100 shots safely, a few 150, and in the spring if I get it dailed in with a good tuner I will try a 200 shot. Plan is to stay in the 100-150 area. https://youtu.be/pIfXpG51DFg https://youtu.be/rd5Zd3TThp8 ( I have since repainted Holley High Ram ) It’s a journey to get it right, still on my journey.

Another thing to consider for better reliability is a way to retard the ignition timing when the nitrous is active. Lingenfelter sells a box for this purpose. |

Stand alone fuel system would be ideal. Of course there are things that need to be addressed to run a shot safely. The old standard was to pull 2 degrees timing per 50hp, 1 heat range colder for a 100, 2 for a 150, 3 for 200+ and non projected tip. Window switch is a good idea as well. In 2018 Nitrous can be a very safe way to add power with all the controllers out there on the market. The LT1 should handle Nitrous better then boost simply because you are not dealing with the same fuel system limitations as Forced Induction...not to mention High Compression and Nitrous work well together.

Thanks for everyone input!
It’s just an idea I’ve been thinking about. It will probably be late 2019 before I get around to anything. I’m just trying to find out if it’s something I should pursue or not. I would be using everything possible to make this a safe setup. Nitrous has always scared me but here lately I see many more people using it, I’m just trying to figure out the reliability of it long term and what measures to be taken to make it safe! Thanks again! |
